5.0 out of 5 stars ECMピアノトリオ作品の傑作, 2003/1/13
マイク・ノックはニュージーランド出身というちょっと変わったピアニストで、現在はJazzを教える教師になってるとかなってないとか。

デイブ・リーブマンやマイケル・ブレッカーとの競演盤もある人で、現在でもコンスタントにアルバムを出しています。他にもテオ・マセロのアルバムに参加してたりと、結構あちこちで名前を見つけられます。でも日本での知名度はかなり低いでしょう。

それはともかく何でも弾けちゃう器用なテクニシャンで、ちょっと泣きの入った曲作りとアドリブセンスは日本人好みかもしれません。そんな彼がECMに残した唯一のアルバムがこれです。

メンバーはベースがEddie Gomez、ドラムがJon Christensenというなかなか豪華なもの。内容はサンプルでも分かりますが、ゆったりした時間の流れとテンションの高さが上手く同居した、とても聞きやすいものです。ちょっと茫洋とした延々と繰り返されるリズムパターンに、最近のダウナー系ロックに近いものも感じられます。バックの二人もその意をよく汲んでいて、素晴らしいサポートを聞かせてくれます。ECMレーベルのピアニストの作品として、スティーブキューンの「Trance」やリッチーバイラークの「ELM」と並みに評価されていい作品じゃないでしょうか。

気に入った方はマイケル・ブレッカーを迎えたアルバム「In Out & around 」も是非どうぞ。最近のNaxosレーベルでの作品もいいですよ。

耽美的なピアノトリオである。このような演奏にはJon Chirstensenのドラムが欠かせない。インテンポじゃないドラムをたたかせたら、この人に勝るドラマーはいないかもしれない。意外とこの人のドラムが作り出す雰囲気は支配的なのだ。ＥＣＭのこの手のアルバムにしょっちゅう顔を出すのも故なきことではない。NockのというよりもEicherの好みが反映されたアルバムではないか。

リッチー・バイラーク(P)でもキース・ジャレット(P)でもなく、その人の名は、マイク・ノックその人である。「本牧のTerje」も今回アルバムを購入することによって、マイク・ノックを知るという失態を演じてしまった。ノックの出身地はニュージーランドと全くジャズには関係のなさそうなお国柄であるのも興味深いが、ベースをプエルトリカンのエディ・ゴメス、ノルウエージャンのヨン・クリステンがドラムという多国籍軍が織り成すサウンドは、ECM総督のマンフレッド・アイヒャー氏の意向に叶った佳作かと思われる。
アップテンポのアルバム最終曲「DOORS」では、ノックにキースが乗移ったのではないかと思われる様な鬼気迫る表現によって、緊迫感三者間に漂い、クライマックスを作っているのではないか。
このノック氏を発掘し、ECMへ招聘した総督アイヒャー氏の慧眼と明確なビジョンにはただただ敬服するのみである。
　何度も言うが、リッチーでもキースでもない、ノックがそこにいる！
