典型的なプレステージレーベルのレコーディングと言える一枚。堅苦しさのないリラックスしたハードバップセッション。この雰囲気どこかマイルスのマラソンセッションに似ていなくもない。レッド・ガーランド名義となっているが、レッド色はあまり強く感じられないクインテット作品。参加ミュージシャンは、Red Garland(p), John Coltrane(ts), Donald Byrd(tp),Paul Chambers,George Joyner(b), Art Tayor(ds)となっている。
１曲目の"Billy's Bounce"からコルトレインが凄い。逞しいトーンのテナーを高速でブイブイに吹きまくる。５８年録音の本作では、５５年のマラソンセッションより、ぐっと成長したプレイぶりを聴かせてくれて頼もしい。セロニアス・モンクカルテットを経て、デビュー、セカンドのリーダー作を発表した後で、充実度が違う。トレインを聴くために購入しても間違いはないだろう。本ＣＤのサブタイトルも、"Red Garlnd Quintet With John Coltrane"である。続いて活きの良い音色を聴かせてくれるのが、トランペットのバードだ。まだクリフォード・ブラウンの影響下にある、ブリリアントな音色が瑞々しい。リーダーのレッドは２曲目のトリオ作"Crazy Rhythm"では、例のレッド節をたっぷり聴かせてくれるが、それ以外の曲では、フロント二人の渋いサポート役に徹している。ドラムスは相変わらずのアート・テイラーなので、一体感のあるスゥイング・ビートを叩き出していて全く問題ない。
ひょっとすると見逃しがちになりそうな一枚だが、なかなか侮れない作品集。最後の１曲はタバコの煙がモクモクと上がってくるような？１６分を越えるディープブルース。これにどっぷりハマルと、本ＣＤから抜け出れなくなること請け合いだ。"All Mornin' Long", "Soul Junction", "High Pressure"の三枚とともに同時期に録音された、”レッド・ガーランドのマラソンセッション”と言われる一枚でもある。
