アシュケナージ初のチャイコフスキー/ピアノ独奏曲アルバム。ロシア出身で国際的キャリアを積んできた彼ならではの自信が現れた演奏であり、作品の持つ感傷的な味わいが美音と共感あふれる表現によって、しなやかに、また語りかけるように紡がれる。


内容 (「CDジャーナル・レビュー」より)

前作のショスタコーヴィチ「24のプレリュードとフーガ」に続くロシアもの。「四季」などはメカニカルな演奏技術で音楽をねじふせるタイプのヴィルトゥオーゾが弾くレパートリーではないが、1曲1曲変化に富む音楽を弾き分けていくことは、全体を見通した音楽的目くばりが必要で幅広い経験がモノを言う。アシュケナージの音は驚くほど繊細で多彩、クリアなのに温かみがある。どんなにセンチメンタルなフレーズも溺れることなく彼流に知的に、詩的に弾く。弾き手と聴き手の距離がちょうどいいところで保たれていて、お互いが適度に寄り添うことができる。このあたりの音楽作りのうまさは本当にすごい。
若い頃素晴らしかったピアニストが年をとって何かわけのわからない演奏をしたりすることもよくあるなかで、アシュケナージの変わらないといえば変わらない、強くてしなやかな音楽、より余裕を感じさせ豊かな音楽を作り上げていく力量は見事。 (井上郷子) --- 1999年12月号

１８７５年１１月、ペテルブルグの出版商Ｎ．ベルナルドから毎月一日にでる雑誌『ヌーヴェリスト』（nouvelliste フランス語で短編小説家、またはゴシップメーカーのような意味）において、チャイコフスキーに１８７６年１月から１年間、毎月一曲のピアノ小品を作曲するという依頼がありました。そしてこの珠玉の名曲集が生まれる。有名なのは「舟歌」と「トロイカ」。当アルバムは有名な「四季」のみでなく、他のチャイコフスキーの知られざるピアノ小品が収められており、しかもアシュケナージが弾いているという貴重なアルバム。清楚で健康的な詩情がチャイコフスキーの洗練を高める。
