　ちょっと音楽に詳しい人ならご存じだが、このアルバムはブライアン・イーノが主催
したオブスキュアーレーベルからの一枚。

　いずれの曲も全く別の時期に再録されているが、無駄にゴージャスになっており、や
はりこのアルバムがシンプルかつ根源的。

　「タイタニック号の沈没」は、当時の資料を基に、沈没の直前まで流されていたとさ
れている賛美歌を基に構築。「イエスの血は消して私を見捨てない」はホームレスの老
人の歌の繰り返しに楽器が積み上がっていくもの。

　繰り返しが多様されるが、ミニマルのような生理的快感とは全く別のところにある音
楽。日本版のレコードが売られていた時代には帯のジャンルに「環境音楽」と書かれて
ましたが、いわゆるイーノやバッドなどのアンビエントとも全く異なるものであり、あ
る意味、分類不能。

　このＣＤはロック方面から来る人と、クラシック方面から来る人に分かれるでしょう
が、前者には、アルヴォ・ペルトや、ジョン・タブナー等を、後者にはイーノや、バッ
ドのみならず、ペンギンカフェオーケストラなどのイーノのお仲間や、コクトーツイン
ズ、ドゥルッティ・コラムなどの英国組、クラウスシュルツや、タンジェリンドリーム
などのドイツロック系をレコメンドすることになるのでしょう。

ジャズ出身の彼の音楽はミニマルとはいえ、無感情なグレイの地平を連想させるような
ヒリヒリした無機質でシステマティックなものではない。
タイタニックの沈没と題名が冠せられたこの作品は、全ての役目を終えたタイタニックが
海面に最早何も残さず海中に沈んでいっている状態を連想させる、暗く冷たい環境音から開始する。
しかしその後はずっと、当時船に乗っていた楽団が演奏したと言われる賛美歌が夢のように繰り返される。
曲送りしようが基本的に同じ曲である。
しかし、その暖かな賛美歌と、不意に立ち現れる合唱の声、
そして海中で鉄が軋むような不穏な不協和音や、微かな人びとの叫ぶ声が渾然一体となり、
そこに冷たい海と天上の世界の境目となってしまったタイタニック号を強く連想させる音楽世界が出現する。
涙無くしては聴けぬ、美しい音楽。
本当に音が海に吸い込まれてゆくようだ。寝る前のチルアウトにも良し。
Jesus's Blood Never Failed Me Yetの方はホームレスの歌声をサンプリングした作品。
そこに乗っかってくるシンフォニックな音達。
完成を待たずしてホームレスは死んでしまったらしいが、
そこがまたなんとも泣ける。
