It's incredible this reached a third instalment, but unsurprising that original composer Basil Poledouris didn't continue scoring. Stepping into the whale-sized shoes comes Cliff Eidelman; discarding the thematic material of either prequel duties (although the Free Willy theme is briefly reprised at the end of the album), and finding remarkable emotional depth without tipping us into sickening schmaltz. His "Rescue" theme is especially touching. At the end of "Obsession" is the only attempt at acknowledging the creature itself with a synth sample that's almost whalesong. Otherwise the parts it replaces in this cue belong to strings. It's also terrific to hear the use of voice from this composer, evoking the memory of what he achieved with choral groups in Triumph of the Will and Star Trek VI. Here we have Francine Poitras combining with pipe solos to delightful effect. --Paul Tonks
