いろいろ当時、ワケありの「ややこしい」アーティストとして評判の高かった？デイブ・メイソンの実力を「これでもか！！」と発揮した驚異的な名作ライブ、結構グループを渡り歩いた遍歴を示す作品とイーグルスそれにボブ・ディラン（というよりジミ・ヘン？）など当時の現役アーティストの曲を気にせずコピーしてしまうのが彼らしい一面を表わしていると思う。それと様々なジャンルを一緒に演奏してしまう実力もなかなかなもので「気に入ったものは何でも演奏しちゃう」という姿勢が当時なかなか受け入れられなかった要因でもありそう。「彼は器用なんだ」といわれていましたが、というより「いい曲は好き」という非常わかりやすい「いいアーティスト」であったということです。今再評価されてしかるべき埋もれた偉大なミュージシャンです。

このアルバムの原題名「Certified Live」の意味は、一切のポストプロダクションをしていない、つまり、音の差し替え、ダビング、エフェクト処理などを全くしていない、という意味と当時メイソンが言ってました。確かに、ミストーンやコーラスの薄さなどはありますが、ライブバンドとして独特のノリと粘りがあることが、良くわかります。また、録音・楽器の定位や音量バランスは好みです。僕はバンドでKeyを担当した時に、Mikeのコピーを４曲ほどやりましたが、オルガン・ピアノ・ワウワウでのクラビなど、どれをとっても、特別早弾きではないけれどファンキーで、ノリを掴むのが難しい。Masonのギターが割りとベタっとしたタッチなので、ややトリッキーなフレーズを好む相方のJimとの相性がこれまた、いい。この頃のメンバーは本当に”味のある”音楽を生んでいて、本作はその姿を良くとらえた好盤です。

「26 letters 12 note」を21年ぶりに発表し、健在ぶり示してくれたデイヴ・メイソン。
この作品は76年のライブだが、勿論リマスターされているから当然かもしれないが、
楽曲・音に古さは全く感じさせない。
デイヴ・メイソンも、とてもリラックしてノッテ演奏している様が伝わってくる内容だ。
イーグルスの「Take to the rimit」では本家をも凌駕するハーモニーを聴かせてくれている。
新作をキッカケに昔のデイヴ・メイソンの作品に脚光が浴びることになれば、デイヴ・ファンとしては嬉しい限りである。
