   キース・ジャレットは、70年代に即興ソロでワン・アンド・オンリーな世界を築きあげた。そのキースがスタンダード曲ばかりを集め、ピアノトリオで演奏したのが本作だ。
   メンバーは、ゲイリー・ピーコック（B）とジャック・デジョネット（Ds）。77年、ゲイリー・ピーコックのリーダーアルバム『テイルズ・オブ・アナザー』でそろった、オールスター的ピアノトリオである。それぞれがスタンダードとは距離を置く、オリジナル曲の演奏が多い革新的なジャズメンだ。そんな顔ぶれでのスタンダードの演奏に、当時のファンは驚いた。だがその後15年以上も、このユニットの活動は続いている。
   本作では、ジャズ界最高ともいえるテクニックとアイデアで、半世紀以上も演奏され続けてきたスタンダードナンバーに、新たな風を吹き込んでいる。彼らのリリースする作品は、ほとんどがライヴ演奏だ。その原点となるスタジオ録音の本作こそ、最高傑作との声が高い。（高木宏真）

While Keith Jarrett has ranged from extended solo improvisation to classical repertoire in his career, there's a special level of discipline in his trio playing with Gary Peacock and drummer Jack DeJohnette, heard here in a 1983 recording that marked the beginning of this particular collaboration. All veterans of the Miles Davis group, they bring strong personalities to traditional jazz repertoire and the piano-trio form. It's the taut discipline of the standard repertoire and the level of group interaction that keeps this music interesting, with Jarrett digging deeply into the melodies and changes of the songs for strong ballad playing on "It Never Entered My Mind" and rapid-fire bop on "All the Things You Are." 1983年1月ニューヨークで録音。実はこの日に録音されたアルバムは3枚ある。スタンダーズ1、そして2、『Changes』である。つまりこの3枚のアルパムは3つ子の関係にあると言う事だ。レコーディングされた順番で言うと『Bregenz Concert』の次がこれら3つ子ということになる。

遡って1971年、キースがまだコロンビアと契約していた頃、ソロ・ピアノ2作をライブでやった後契約を一方的に打ち切られたという事があり、その前に当時は全く無名だったECMのマンフレート・アイヒャーからレコーディングの3つの企画提案を受けていた。その3つというのは、

1.チック・コリア、ゲイリー・ピーコック、デイブ・ホランドとの2台のピアノと2台のベースとのレコーディング
2.ソロ・ピアノのレコーディング
3.ゲィリー・ピーコック、ジャック・ディジョネットとのトリオのレコーディング

である。そのうちの2が1971年11月10日オスロで吹き込まれた『フェイシング・ユー』であり、3が3人の名前で吹き込まれたのは本作および3つ子の2作ということで、その12年後!ということになる。(ゲイリー・ピーコックの『Tales Of Another』は別として)

このユニットがライブでなくスタジオで3作を作ったというところにまず重要なポイントがある。また、2作がスタンダード・ナンバー、1作がオリジナルというのも後のスタンダーズの活動の青写真を見ているようで極めて興味深い。1と2はメンバーおよびアイヒャーの意見でどのように並べる事も出来たのだろう。この後『スビリッツ』という癒しの期間が85年の5月から6月にかけての4週間あり、そこからすぐにスタンダーズのライブが延々と続くようになる。そう考えると、『スビリッツ』以前の自分の中でこのスタンダーズというユニットの可能性と重要性にキース自身が気がついたと言う事でもあるようだ。

個人的にはスタンダース2の演奏、特に『So Tender』が最も好きな演奏だ。

2004年のJAPAN TOURに行ってきました。

ちなみに私は音楽専門学生でした。

後日、そのことを学校一のプロに話したら開口一番「何やってるか解かんなかったでしょ？ｗｗ俺でも今になってようやく解かるくらいだもん」と言われました。

そう、彼等のコンサートは本当に「解からない」レベルの演奏でした。

「All the things you are」がプレイされたのですが今まで聴いたどのプレイよりもテンポが速い！！

なんとかリズムを追ってたもののジャック・ディジョネットのドラムソロに入ったとたんカオスソロ化してリズムを見失いました。

ドラムソロが終わった後に待っていたのはなんとフリージャズ！！

カオスカオスカオス！！

で締めは最初のテンポの倍のテンポでの演奏！！

あっけに取られるとはこのこと。


このアルバムでも「All the things you are」がプレイされてますがやはりプロを目指す者でも理解が難しいプレイをしています。

曲が元々ハイレベルっていうのもありますが・・・。

う〜ん・・・神の頂は雲の上、というわけですかねぇ・・・。


JAZZ初心者にはおススメ出来ない一枚です。

細やかだが神経質なキースの演奏。キースについては、繊細かつ魂を絞り出すような彼のソロには独特の世界観を感じる。ただ、個人的にはそれが時折やや神経質または行き過ぎてくどい表現になりすぎるきらいがあるのではと感じる。現在の円熟の域に到達しつつあるKeithからすれば、この演奏は若々しいが表現が十分でないと感じるかもしれない。今はある種深くなりすぎていて、身構えないと気楽に聞けないイメージがあるのだ。でも本作品でのキースは、僕が普段常に聞いているときに、自分の肌に一番しっくりくる感じがする。特筆すべきは、本作特に２曲目のAll the…は、素晴らしいバランスがとれたシンプルかつ躍動感があり想像力に満ちた演奏で、個人的な思い出もあるのだが、僕にとっては忘れようがない、今まででもっとも印象に残る曲の一つだろうと思う。
