本作はどの曲も美しい粒ぞろいの見事な演奏ばかりで、キースの諸作品の中で、ケルンコンサートとともに２大巨峰を形成する、奇跡的な作品だと私は思う。特にタイトル曲とCountryが好きだ。CountryでBaseがリードをとり、その後キースのピアノが入ってくる瞬間は筆舌に尽くし難い。大げさでなく、このような演奏を聴けるなんて、人生捨てたものではない、これまで生きてきてよかった、と前向きな気持ちにさせてくれます。そんな、キースたちからの素晴しい珠玉の贈り物です。

キースのヨーロピアンカルテットの代表作。キースのソロピアノをグループで演ったみたいな甘くロマンチックな音楽だ。アーシーでちょっと胡散臭いアメリカンカルテットとは、随分テーストが異なっている。良くも悪くも、それがキースというミュージシャンの幅なのだろう。

その米欧のカルテットをアウヘーベンしたのが例のスタンダーズだとするのは図式的に過ぎるだろうか？

それにしても、ここでのいま一人の主役はヤン・ガルバレク。このメロディックなサックスは、実はとても奥が深い。ヨーロピアン・カルテットでもライブでは激しい演奏を繰り広げているし、フリージャズ、現代音楽、民族音楽などさまざまな影響を受けている。現代的でかつ伝統的、地域的でかつグローバル、感情的でかつ知的、いまやECMを代表するアーティストの一人である。

このアルバムでの美しいサックスはガルバレクの魅力のほんの一部に過ぎない。私のお薦めはC.ヘイデン、E.ジスモンチと共演した「Folk　Song」「Magico」、リーダーアルバムの「Legend of the Seven Dreams」「Twelve　Moon」、ヒリヤード・アンサンブルとの「Offitium」などである。このアルバムをきっかけにして、ぜひガルバレクの多彩な魅力を楽しんでほしい。

ところで、この「マイソング」。「ケルン」もそうだったが、一時はよくスーパーマーケットや喫茶店で流れていた。ケニーＧなみの扱いだが、キースはそれを喜んでいるのだろうか。キースのキャリアでは、チックの「リターン・ツウ・フォーエバー」に匹敵する作品かもしれない。好き嫌いは分かれるだろうけど、私は割と早い目に飽きてしまった。「Personal Mountain」や「Sunshine Song」といったライブの方がお気に入りです。

このアルバムはキース・ジャレットの作品ではあるが、ヤン・ガルバレクの作品としても素晴らしい出来栄えだ。この人のソプラノ・サックスを僕は氷のサックスと例えたい。氷といっても冷たいのでなく、氷のように強く美しいのだ。最初にこの人の「ウィッチ・タイ・ト」のサックスを聴いた時の感動は今も忘れられない。ジャレットのピアノも全アルバムで一番暖かい気がする。忘れる事ができない、何度も何度もこれからも聴くであろう名盤。
