このアルバムを一言でいうと、とにかく捨て曲がないこと。全曲プリファブならではの高品質でウイットに富んだ素敵なポップスを奏でている。そんなのプリファブのアルバム全てに言えることじゃないかと思うかもしれないが、その一連のディスコグラフィーの中でも、一際粒が揃っているのがこのアルバムだと思う。アルバム全体を通したコンセプトものが多い彼らのアルバムの中で、ここでは１曲単位で、極上の良い歌を書いていこうというパティの決意みたいなものがこのアルバムからは感じられる。プロデュースを、トーマス・ドルビーだけでなく、何組かを分けて起用しているのも、そういう意図からだと思う。

曲は、M1、M2とプリファブ史上最もキャッチーな曲で幕を開け、その後は3曲極上のバラードが続く。このアルバムのすごいところは、バラードが続いても、その1曲1曲のクオリティが果てしなく高く、いちいちため息をついてしまう素晴らしさというところだ。一緒に歌ってみると、そのメロディがなめらかなようでいて、とても練り込まれているということに気付くと思うが、珍しいコード展開をしながらもスムーズな展開を持つ曲、つまり普遍性のある局作りをするようにパティの作曲法が移行していく途上だったのかもしれない。続くM6は、プリファブを代表する大名曲。サビの美しさは一度聴けば、忘れられないだろう。その後も一風変わったコード展開のM7、シンプルなロックチューンM8、これまた極上バラードのM9、M10と続き、アルバムは全く捨て曲なしに終わる。ラスト2曲のあまりに美しいメロディを聴き終わる頃には、このアルバム自体の良さとかを飛び越して、音楽そのものの素晴らしさに感嘆したくなるような気分になっていることだろう。それくらい完璧な一枚だと思う。

「スティーヴ・マックイーン」に続いてリリースされたアルバムで、大ヒット曲1を収録（全英7位）。プロデュースは再びトーマス・ドルビーが担当。恐らく、全作品中最もポップな仕上がりだと思う。バラードが多いのも特徴の一つ。これまでのひんやりとした感触が少々薄れ、温かみを持ったナンバーが増えている。彼らの代表曲中の代表曲で、これまでとは比較にならないほどポップで軽快な12（名曲！）や、初の本格的なソウルナンバー356、「ファロン・ヤング」と並ぶロックン・ロール路線の代表的なナンバー8（ロックなのに彼らならではの哀愁が色濃く滲み出てしまっているのがいかにも　笑）も最高。そして終盤9、10（これは彼ら初のゴスペル・ナンバー）は成熟した彼らの魅力が120％堪能できる素晴らしいバラードで、今現在のパディの作風に真っ直ぐに繋がる要素を持っているような気がする。「スティーヴ・マックイーン」と並ぶ、彼らの最高傑作。

８８年発表の３ｒｄ。プリファブ・スプラウトの初期の傑作アルバム。最高傑作と言っても問題がない作品だが、これ以降も同水準の作品を発表しているため甲乙が付け難い。コンパクトにまとまっているためポップスとしはこちらの作品の方がポイントは高いだろう。演奏はシンプルで、ロック的なルーズさや熱さを感じさせないクールなものだが、厳選された音色と共に良く練られたフレーズが満載の高い完成度を誇る作品だ。
ポップスという意味においても文句の付けようもない完成度を誇る１．だけでも、エレガントなこのアルバムの品位の高さが伺えるというもの。そしてその１．のタイトルにでもかけるかのように２．ではいきなりブルース・（スプリングスティーン) の戯言を攻撃する。シニカルにではなくかなり直接的にブルースを皮肉るこの曲も甘美で美しいものだが、その内容はかなりキツい。未だに「盗んだバイクで走り出す」に共感を覚えるバカが多い日本と同様に、あちらでもその手の曲が人気なのはどこか可笑しい。そしてそれを強く拒絶する彼らもまた可笑しい。
緩やかに時間が流れていくリゾート体験のような美メロが満載。美しいストリングスの調べとシンセによるブラスなどが全く同じ質感で聞こえて来る。ゴージャスだけど嫌みのないサウンドは究極の一言。愛聴盤にしている人は多いでしょう。
