Fleetwood Macと言っても「Then Play On」までとそれ以降とは全く別のバンドと考えた方がよい。前者の方はブル-ズバンドであり、後者はポップバンドとなったからである。このアルバムはブル-ズバンドとしての彼らの存在を一躍、世界に知らしめた傑作である。'60年代後半、イギリスは大ブル-ズブ-ムであり、Cream,Blues Breakers,Chicken Shack,Savoy Brown,Ten Years After,などたくさんのブル-ズバンド或いはブル-ズオリエンティッドバンドが雨後のタケノコの様に現れた。その一つがこのFleetwood Macである。'67年結成当時はPeter GreenとJeremy SpencerのTwin Guitarだったが途中から３人目のギタ-リストとしてダニ-カ-ウェンが入った。このアルバムの話に戻るが、サンタナがアレンジカバ-して大ヒットした(1),J.Spencerのペンによる(2),(11),ダニ-カ-ウェンの(4),(10),勿論、リ-ダ-のP.Greenも（１）以外に(12)と素晴らしいブル-ズナンバ-が続く。(6),(8)は息抜きのインスト曲。特に(6)は当時、シングルカットされ、かなりヒットした。彼らは相当ブル-ズを研究していたと思われ、音作り、フィ-リング、フレ-ジング等においても白人バンドとしては、ましてやイギリスのバンドとしては傑出していた。その金字塔作品がこのアルバムである。因みに最近になってP.Greenを知った人にはこの作品によって彼の全盛期を是非知ってもらいたい。

時代背景とお国柄上、ブルースと言うフォーマットに乗っかっていますが、その辺バンドとは一味も二味も違いますね。殆どのメンバーが曲を書けると言う奇跡的な幸運(事実？)に恵まれている点が要因の一つとも思うんですが、この“English Rose”の中では特に(P.Greenはともかく)D.Kirwenの存在が輝いています。20代そこそこという若さにもかかわらず、アルバム中P.Greenに負けず劣らずの曲提供、本作中のマスターピースと言っても過言ではないT4は彼のペンによるもので、P.Greenのギターの音色をより美しく引き立て、非凡なる才能を覗かせています。

とかく7thスリーコードの世界と言うものは五七五の四面楚歌で、玄人以外には退屈なものになりがちなんですが、各所に箸休め的にインストナンバー(P.GreenのペンによるT12は大ヒット！)を散りばめる心憎い演出は、聴く者を飽きさせないための彼らなりの努力とセンスの良さの表れだと思います。

しかしながら、やはりP.Greenは凄いの一言で、フレーズやリック云々と言うレベルでは無く、一音一音が生命を帯びているとでも言うのでしょうか？煙草の煙と安酒の匂いのするくぐもった空気の中、必要最小限の音数で、蠢き、そして泣いています。彼こそ、ホワイトブルース界でも「ブルース＝フィーリング」と言い切る事の出来る、数少ない“選ばれし者”ではないでしょうか？

マックと言えばピーター･グリーン在籍時が飛び抜けて高い評価を受けているが,セールス的にはあまり良くは無かった｡逆にヴォーカル時代のマックはやたら売上を伸ばしたが,記憶に残り続けるものにはならなかったと思う｡
そこでマックと言えばこのアルバムジャケットが思い浮かぶほど有名なのが英吉利の薔薇なのである｡

勿論デビューアルバムも素晴らしいのだが,少年の日の脳裏に残るのはミック貴婦人が取り乱した姿のこのジャケットである｡音は勿論初期のマックのブルーズ一本勝負で,音楽そのものには派手さは無いのだが,聞いていると独特の世界に引き込まれるムードが不気味なくらい心地良い｡
ヴォーカルもメイヨールよりもこちらの方が素敵だ｡

ピーター･グリーンは当時白人でジミヘンに対抗できる存在感を持っていた数少ないギタリストでした｡
初期の頃はチェス･セッションまで入れて皆傑作揃いだと思う｡
