   最初にLPで出たのが80年。その後、それまでのレコーディング・セッションでお蔵入りになっていたテイクのなかから、5曲を選曲。そこに、ハンコック自身のワン・マン・レコーディングによる新たな1曲を加えたのが本作だ。
   掘り出した5曲のうち4曲には、ハンコックがシンセサイザーなどをダビングしている。メンバーはセッションごとに違い、トニー・ウィリアムス（ドラムス）、ハービー・メイスン（ドラムス）、ジャコ・パストリアス（エレクトリック・ベース）、ロン・カーター（ベース）ら豪華な顔ぶれがそろう。
   幻想的でゴージャズなサウンドを楽しめるのは、スローナンバーの<1>だ。レオン・チャンクラーが執ようにくり返すシンプルなベースパターンに乗って、ハンコックがスペイシーな音の幕を1枚、また1枚と重ねていくのが聴きものだ。（松本泰樹）

このアルバム自体は　ファンク色は少なく、かと言って、オーソドックスなジャズでもない。上手い人達が　肩の力を抜いてプレイすると、こんな渋いアルバムが　できます！みたいな気がする。特に　この中の　”４ＡＭ”は　めちゃカッコ良い(^-^)。ハービー・ハンコックも　さる事ながら、ベースが、今は亡き天才ジャコ・パストゥリアスというのも正解！ ”いぶし銀”のような曲で、”４ＡＭ”だけでも買う価値はあるのではないか？ フュージョンのスタジオ・ミュージシャン好みのイメージを持ってます。

狙っていたものなのか、苦渋の選択だったのか、正確なところは誰も判らないかも知れませんが、本作（'80年作品）までにリリースされた作品や行われたセッションからの未発表テイク集。
尤も、単にお蔵入りしていたテープを出してきただけではなく、改めてH.ハンコック自身がオーバーダビングなどの手入れをしている辺り、なかなかの念の入れようです。
”バタフライ”辺りの匂いを漂わせる[1]や、スティール・パン？がいい感じの[2]（クレジットはS.エスコヴェド＝シーラEです）。ワー.ワー.ワトソンのカッティング・ギターがなんともファンキーな[3]。そして、皆さんのお目当ての（？）J.パストリアス（b）参加の[4]。
一説によれば、あまりにもコマーシャルになり過ぎた当時のH.ハンコックのサウンドに辟易しかけたファンに対して、その溜飲を下げさせるための作品とも言われていますが、元々、「上がる溜飲のない」私にとっては単純にすごくいい作品として捉えています。
また、私のもう1つの聴き方としては、多くのドラマーの演奏が聴けるという点です。L.ンドゥグ.チャンクラー（[1]）、T.ウィリアムス（[2]）、A.モーゾン（[3]）、H.メイソン（[4]、[5]）と、偶然にせよ何にせよ、これだけのドラマーの演奏が聴ければ文句は言いません(^^;
丁度、70's中期から後期にかけてのH.ハンコック・ワークスをクイックリーに見てゆく（聴いてゆく）にはいい作品です。

口の悪い人は「お蔵入りのテイクにシンセサイザーを付け足しただけじゃないか。」と言ったりしますが、こんなお蔵入りならもっと聴きたいぐらいです。
コロンビア時代のいろいろな時期のものがネタになっていますので、ヘッド･ハンターズからアコースティック回帰のものまでコロンビア時代の全体像が俯瞰できます。
「ハービー･ハンコックってどんな人なの？」と聞かれた場合には、とりあえずブルーノート時代の「処女航海」とこのアルバムを薦めることにしています。
特に2曲目の'カリプソ'は過去に録音されたアコースティック･トリオの演奏に後でシンセサイザーをオーバー･ダビングしたものです。このアイデアは後のライブでも使われていました。一時期ハンコックは伝統的なジャズ･コンボのフォーマットでアコースティック･ピアノの上に小さなキーボードを置いて時々サウンドのカラーリングに使用していたことがあります。すぐ止めちゃいましたけどね。
