THE EXTREMISTのライナーノーツでこの作品を「化け物のような馬鹿テク博覧会」という言葉で表しており、それが原因で実際に聴くのが遅れてしまった。あのライナーを書いたライターはどう聴いてそういう表現をしたのだろうか？
確かにこの作品でサトリアーニは超絶技巧をふんだんに披露しているが、想像していたような速弾きオンパレードの退屈なアルバムではなかった。後々のアルバムと聴き比べてみても、この時点で彼のメロディセンスが十分に確立されているのがよくわかる。特にRubinaは名曲だ。テクニック一辺倒の凡百なギタリストにはこの味わいは出せない。
「ギター１本あればすべてを表現できる」
そう言ったサトリアーニの言葉に偽りはない。

ご存知、３歳年下のスティーヴ・ヴァイにギターを一から教え込んだスーパー・ギタリスト、Joe Satrianiによる1985年発表の幻のファーストです。Satrianiが76年から77年の半年間、京都に住んで日本人相手にギターを教えたり、また京都のライブハウスでジミヘンのカバーを演奏していたりしたことは有名ですが、そもそもギターを本格的にはじめたのは1970年にジミヘンが薬物中毒が元で若くしてこの世を去ったことに大きなショックを受けたことが発端です。そしてジミヘンの後継者になるべくギターの猛練習に励むと同時に、ジャズピアニストからジャズ理論を学んだことで、ジャズギターの素養も身に付けています。ここら辺が凡庸なギタリストとは一線も二線も画している点で、まさに「ジミヘンの後継者」を体現している所以です。

このデビュー作はそんな背景のもとに生まれたわけですが、強烈な思いとは反比例して、曲やプレイは実に軽やかで、変に気負うどころか逆に悠然たるものさえ感じます。曲芸のようなプレイの裏には何十倍もの蓄積、キャリアがあるにもかかわらず、それを決してひけらかすことなく淡々とギターに対峙するさまからは、例えようもない凄みさえ感じさせます。ギター好き人間にとっては、まさに必須アイテム！

１９８５年リリースの幻のファーストアルバムと言われていた作品・・・ジョーがギター・ベース・キーボードを一人で演奏し、ジェフキャムピテリがドラムを叩いています。とにかく巧い・・・ある種大道芸人的要素はありますが、テクニックも然ることながらメロディーラインの作り方も素晴らしいセンスと感じます。ルックスとのギャップもまたいいですね（笑）！！個人的には８曲目のようなヘヴィな曲が良かったです・・・音色が変幻自在！！１０曲目は２分位の小曲ですが超絶技巧の真骨頂・・・唖然、凄すぎる。アナログは因みにジャケットが違ってました。ジョーサトリアーニの若き日の超絶プレイが目白押しの必聴の１枚です！！
