   イーノがはじめて世に知られたのはロキシー・ミュージックの一員としてだった。シンセサイザー奏者としてバンドの他の楽器を電子的に“処理し”、それがレコーディングの過程そのものを自らの表現手段として選ぶ第一歩となった。次なるキャリアでは、ポップス界切っての刺激的なアーティストとして、“アンビエント音楽”などのあいまいなサウンドを精力的に追い求めるだけにとどまらず、デヴィッド・ボウイやトーキング・ヘッズやU2の重要作のプロデュースも手がけた。そんななか1970年代には一般向きのアルバムもほんの数枚制作している。とりわけ本作は『Before and After Science』と並んで、もっとも息の長い人気を誇るソロアルバムに挙げられるだろう。

   本作では、ディストーションを効かせた（ロバート・フリップの）ギターを、さまざまなキーボートやエキゾチックなリズムとミックスさせて、瞑想的でありながら多彩なタッチに満ちたサウンドを作りあげている。なかでも魅力的なのは、フリップが驚くべきギターワークを聴かせる軽快な「St. Elmo's Fire」と、ひたむきな実験主義者であっても柔軟な心を持つことができると教えてくれる「I'll Come Running」だ。また、なんとも意外なことに、フィル・コリンズがドラムとパーカッションで3曲に参加している。（John Milward, Amazon.com）

イーノの3作目にあたる本作はバラエティにとんだ傑作です。イーノ独特のねじれたポップスあり、のちのアンビエントシリーズにさきがけたいくつかの小品が織り込まれ、気がつくと延々とリピートしてたりします。参加メンバーはフィルコリンズ、パーシージョーンズ、ロバートフリップなどなどです。しかし、何度聴いてもタイトルチューンには気持ちがなごみますね。イーノの声もサウンドの一部ように聴こえ、なおかつのびのびと聴こえます。またこういう感じのアルバム作る気はないんでしょうか。何十年たってもとてもよいアルバムです。

この作品はイーノの過渡期の作品です。
ロキシーミュージックを首になった恨みを晴らすかのごとくギンギンギラギラの
グラムで迫ったウオームジェッツとタイガーマウンテンの２作から
うって変わって、半分環境音楽に足を突っ込み始めた模索期のイーノらしい中途半端さが
逆にとてもいい。
このアルバムにはスカイソウのような荒々しい実験曲もあれば、
ドラムを使わないのにリズミックな歌モノポップもあり、
身の回りの音を取り込んで曲にしてみましたというような環境音楽の萌芽もみられる。
つまり、イーノのすべての面が現れているんだ。
イーノはそれぞれをすべて面白がってやっているのがよく感じられる。
だから、聴く側はにやにやしながら、ただただ音を楽しめる。
イーノの初めの一枚にお薦め。

イーノと言えばアンビエント、といったイメージが強いですが、このアルバムはアンビエントな要素もありますが、ポップな要素もあります。ですから、ディープなアンビエントを期待してる人には不向きかも。そしてイーノ自身のヴォーカルも聴くことができます。　紙ジャケになったことで音が良くなった、とのことで試しに買い替えたのですが、ホントに音が鮮明になっていたので買って正解だと実感しました。イーノが好きで、尚且つ今までの音では物足りない、っていう人には「紙ジャケ」はオススメですよ。他にも数枚「紙ジャケ」に買い替えたのですが、どれも音が良くなっています。
