英国jazz-rockの雄、Brand Xの生演奏集。その高度な演奏技術に脱帽である。もともとスタジオ盤でも多重録音や音響操作を余り行わず実力で聴き手をねじ伏せるところのあるバンドだけにライヴではさらにノリの良さが加わった凄い演奏を行うが、どこか醒めた英国的屈折も忘れないところがエライ。特に、鬼才パーシー・ジョーンズの変態知性派的ベースとロビン・ラムリーのツボを心得たミニムーグ・フェンダーローズが出色。未発表曲も入っており得した気分である。Brufordの"One of a kind"とならんで英国jazz-rockの真髄が堪能できるという点でお薦めである。

英国ＪＡＺＺロックの雄BRAND Xのライブアルバムです。フィルコリンズがジェネシスの活動と並行して参加していたことでも有名です。
サウンドの特徴としては、米国フュージョンらとは明らかに一線を画す妖しげでダークなサウンドでしょうか。これには変態ベーシストパーシージョーンズの作り出す音がかなり貢献していると思います。

また、全員が超絶技巧者だけに、高度な演奏とその掛合いを堪能できるのも彼らの魅力だと思います。オリジナルアルバムでもそれは味わえるのですが、ライブアルバムということで、その魅力がさらにアップしています。

ただ、ブラッフォードやポンティらと比べると、曲のコマーシャリズムという点では劣ると思いますので、超絶技巧の掛合いが好きな方にお奨めのライブアルバムです。

「マハビシュヌ・オーケストラの手法を元にしたジャズ・ロック」は半分当たりくらいでしょうな。フィル・コリンズのサイドプロジェクト的なスタートだったこともあって、ロックでも無い、プログレでも無い、どうにもＢ級的な要素が付きまわっているバンドですが、このライブアルバムは超強力！パーシーのプライマスなんて全然目じゃない超絶変態ベース、親の仇のように弾きまくるグッドソールはスタジオ盤とはケタ違いだし、闇雲に疾走するリズムの中に見え隠れする美味なメロ。もうどうにでもしてくれ~・・・脳みそメルトダウン覚悟で聞くべし！
