With his songwriting muse on pause, Bob Dylan spent the mid-'90s recording old folk and blues standards with just himself, a harmonica, and an acoustic guitar. Good As I Been to You was the first effort. For the follow-up, World Gone Wrong, he went even further into the dark night of the soul. His voice aged by road-weary experience and informed by lifelong insight delivers just the right pathos to these tales of lost love and existential blight. Tom Paley, one of the original New Lost City Ramblers, popularized "Love Henry," a symbolic tale of a businessman who loses his soul traveling through the halls of corruption. あのパティ・スミスが「お気に入りの一枚」にも挙げているアコースティック・アルバム。積極的なツアー活動を続ける一方で、明らかに曲作りへの意欲を失っていたのが90年代初頭のディラン。それでも契約上の理由からか（？）、92年には「Good As I Been To You」、翌年に「World Gone Wrong」をリリースしている。見方によっては「その場しのぎのカバー作品集」でしかなかったかもしれないが、この二枚で聴かせる音楽は実に味わい深い。全曲がカバー、しかもディラン本人の歌とギター（＋ハーモニカ）のみで聴かせるというシンプルさもあって、適度にリラックスした雰囲気を漂わせながらも、パフォーマーとして楽曲に取り組む姿勢は真剣そのものだ。そのせいか、特に80年代中期のアルバムに見られた「レコード会社やプロデューサーとモメるのも面倒だから、とりあえずリリースしちまえ」といったやる気のなさはあまり感じられない。（もっとも、彼自身の厭世観はかなり色濃く選曲に反映されているようだが･･･）
「Good As...」の続編ともいえるこのアルバムではブルース色がより強く出ていて、長年の酷使によってボロボロになってしまった彼の声は「Delia」や「Two Soldiers」といった悲しい歌に見事にマッチしている。聴きどころは「Broke Down Engine」での激しいギター演奏、そして「Jack-A-Roe」の不気味にリバーブを効かせた低い声が「Lone Pilgrim」では一転して優しく語りかけるような歌声になるあたりか。「どうか私が逝ってしまっても泣かないで」と歌うこのラスト・ナンバーは実に感動的だ。（ふと、「60歳を過ぎたジョー・ストラマーにもこんなアルバムを作ってもらいたかった」と思ってしまう。）ディランを初めて聴く人にはあまりオススメできないが、「Street Legal」や「Shot of Love」同様、「ハマってしまうとヤバい一枚」と言い切ってしまおう。

前作「Good As I Been To You」 に続き50年代トラディショナルソングカバー、そしてたギター一本での弾き語り。＃７「Stack A Lee」以外ハーモニカすら入らない。前作よりもブルース色が強い曲が多数。はっきり言って、ほとんど知らない曲ばかりなので、聴き馴染みがないし、ディランによる曲が無いので、当時かなりがっかりした。また私的にもデッキに入れる回数が極端に少ないＣＤの中の1枚。
この頃本人からも、もう曲は書かないとコメントがあったけど、近年のリラックスした活躍は嬉しい。

　「グッド・アズ・アイ・ビーン・トゥ・ユー 」とまったく同じことが当てはまる。さらに、一枚だけならまだしも、同じ趣向でアルバムをリリースするとはさらに許せない。
　念のため繰り返しておく。内容の是非の問題ではない。こういうアルバムを出すこと自体、ディランが「終わっている」ことの証明になってしまうのだ。
　このアルバムを称揚するということは、その人物がボブ・ディランの筋金入ったファンではない、ということの「踏み絵」にすらなる、と考えている。
