   バド・パウエルはモダン・ジャズ・ピアノの父といわれる人。ビバップの語法をいち早くマスターし、新しい時代のピアノ・スタイルを完成させた。後続のピアニストに与えた影響力も絶大である。今日ではごく当たり前のピアノ~ベース~ドラムスというトリオ編成を一般的なものにしたのもパウエルである。しかしパウエルは破滅型のジャズマンだったため、麻薬所持で逮捕されたり精神病院で過ごしたりと、私生活は不安定だった。そのためピアニストしての絶頂期は短かった。
   これは47年の初リーダー・セッション8曲と53年の8曲をカップリングした作品で、モダン・ジャズ・ピアノのバイブルとまでいわれる名作。特にカーリー・ラッセル&マックス・ローチと組んだ47年の演奏では、天才ぶりを遺憾なく発揮している。アップ・テンポの<2>はスピード感と泉のように湧き出るイマジネーションの豊かさに圧倒される本作のハイライト。53年録音(後半の8曲)は、ジョージ・デュビビエ&アート・テイラーとの演奏。（市川正二）

マイルス・デイヴィスにいわせると、ジャズ界で真の天才と呼べるのは、チャーリー・パーカーとバド・パウエルのふたりだけなんだそうです。
という訳で、そのパウエルの代表作として筆頭に挙げられる１枚（他にもあるけど）にして、ピアノ・トリオに於けるスタンダード中のスタンダードであり、聖典。
天才の絶技が炸裂するＭ２をはじめとして、「好調なパウエル」の空恐ろしさ（？）が、１６トラック、４５分足らずの中にこれでもかと凝縮されてます。
聴けば聴くほど引き摺り込まれ。ああ、凄い。
お薦め。

精神病や麻薬禍に悩まされて、長期にわたってハイレベルを保つことが出来なかったパウエルだが、この１９４７年の録音は至高の名演というべきもので、これを聴かずしてモダン・ジャズ・ピアノは語れないと言っても過言ではない。
後のピアニストに与えた影響も絶大で、ピアノ・ジャズのファンはまずこのアルバムから聴き始めるべきである。
当然の事ながら音質は良くないが、音だけいい最新録音の愚作を十枚聴くよりも、この一枚を聴くことから得られるものの方が遙かに多いと思う。

1947年と1953年の演奏が収録されています。50年も前にこんなすごいピアノトリオがあったこと自体驚きです。後半の８曲は1953年の再起後の演奏ですが、音色もさえており是非ともピアノファンには聞いていただきたい１枚です。ビル・エバンスファンの方はココに原点があると思って購入されてはいかが・・・
