とにかくアナログのＬＰをターンテーブルにおいた日から、半年ほどにわたって、毎日欠かさず聴いた。何度も何度も繰り返し針を乗せ、歌詞もほぼ暗記してしまうほどだった。犬の散歩をしながら、いろんな歌を次々と口ずさんだ。「You've Got A Friend」「So Far Away」「Natural Woman」「Way Over Yonder」「Home Again」あたりがお気に入りだった。

洋楽の聴き始めのころ、ビートルズでもプレスリーでもなく、キャロル・キングだけがなぜこんなにも深く心に滲みたのか。それは今もわからない。

ただ過剰な自意識を抱えていた少年には、キャロルは世界への一筋の通路だった。冬の後には春が来る。恋が終わっても人生は続く。人は人と関わってしか生きていけない。「どんなに不器用でも、不細工でも」。このアルバムを聴きながら、そんなことをとりとめもなく、しかし真摯に考えていたのである。それはやっぱり説明しにくいことだけれども……。

とまれ、厚顔に生き恥をさらしてきたオヤジは、今でも年に何度かこのアルバムを聴く。時折、犬に引っ張られて手のひらに鎖がくい込む感覚が甦ってくるが、もはや少年の日のように口ずさむことはない。ただ、杯を傾けて、酔いに身をまかせるばかりである。

長い時が過ぎた―。しかし、キャロル・キングはここにいる。多くの若いリスナーを獲得しながら……。そのことをオールドファンは静かに喜びたい。

5.1ch付きです。音はソース自体がテープなのでその系統の音で、ワウ・フラや歪感はやむなしですが、CD盤のあのプアーな音質からは解放されてなんとか音に我慢せずアルバムの仕上がり自体に没頭できる音質です。特にSN比とパーカッション類の高域音とセパレーションに差異が顕著です。個人的にはお勧めします。
