Album Details

Reissue of the debut album by jazz rock group formed by John Hiseman & Mick Clarke after the demise of their band Colosseum. Legendary guitarist Allan Holdsworth was a member for this first outing. Contains all of the cuts from when the Bronze label originally issued the record in 1973, including 'Gorgon'. Eight tracks total. Also features the original cover art. 1999 release.

ハードロック時代のアランホールズワースのギターが聴ける希有な１枚。７２年の本作で一躍スターダムにのり上がった彼だが、ファイヤーズオブファンや楽しいブギのストレンジハー（絶対渡辺香津美がジャズロックやるときパクってそう）の早弾きは圧巻。聴く者をうならせてくれますね。アポントモローはこの先（ソフトマシーン参加など）を予感させるようなジャジーなナンバー（ホールズワースはバイオリンも弾いている）。ポールウィリアムスの野太いしゃがれボーカルやハイズマンのボーナムばりのズンドコドラムとあいまって、単なるハードロックではないすばらしいオリジナル作品に仕上がっている。ゼップやＢＢＡなんかと比べても何の遜色もありません。（むしろこっちのほうが好きだったりします。）この1枚でホールズワースはウィリアムスと共に脱退してしまうのだが、後釜のギタリストオリーハルソール（この人も劇ウマ！）を交えた幻の、ライブアルバム（音質が多少悪い）があるのだが、これがすごい！何しろこの馬鹿テク二人のギター合戦で、ハイズマンのドラムが霞んでしまうほどだ。ライブアルバムも正式に発売されることを待ち望みたい。

1978年からアラン・ホールズワースのファンをやって早25年。当時レコード店で一度試聴したきりで入手できなかったアルバムがようやくＣＤで購入できました。改めて聴いてみて感じたのは、まずあのホールズワースが「ハードロックを演っている!!」のがとても「新鮮」だったのと、1973年であのギターソロを弾かれたのでは、当時スーパーギタリストと呼ばれた人達が彼とまともに比較されたら霞んでしまっただろうな、という事です。それと１曲だけ入っているバイオリンソロのテクニックにも驚きました。長年に渡るホールズワースのキャリアの中で、ディストーションを効かせた「かっこいい」リフを聞かせてくれる、唯一の「ロックアルバム」として存在価値は大きいと言えます。

ジョン・ハインズマン（ドラム）がコラシアムとコロシアムIIの間に結成したテンペストは２枚しか作品を残していないが本作がファースト。ここではアラン・ホールズワース（ギター）の参加に話題は集中するが、やはり要は御大のハインズマン。なにせ大半の曲で曲を作った彼で、作品に対するの思い入れの強さを感じさせる。プレイもその重いとしか形容の仕様がないプレイを聞かせてくれる。しかも重いのは一人だけではなく、好き嫌いの分かれそうなポール・ウィリアムス（米国のソングライターではない）のゲロゲロ声、そしてアラン・ホールズワースのウネウネ・ギターと役者がそろっている。こんな音は滅多にない。それでいながら「5.アップ・アンド・オン」はポップな名曲。
