トータスとか好きなら絶対にお薦めだから。と言われて聴いてから、トータスそっちのけでモグワイが好きになった。
そのきっかけになったアルバムだ。
ドラムってこんなにリアルなリズムを刻むことができたのか！ギターってこんなに美しい音色を出すことができるのか！
静かな美しいメロディーと共に大きな衝撃を受けた。

スタジオにこもり、追求する音の世界に没年して楽曲を生み出していったストイックな姿勢が見える気がして、胸が熱くなる。

「Cody」を聴いて、もっと彼等がつくる歌の入った曲を聴いてみたいと思った。

99年リリースの2nd。
初期衝動をダイレクトにぶつけた前作とは異なり、モノクロームで静謐な印象を受ける。
ギターのディストーションはかなり後退したが、
より太く強靭さを増したリズム、一音一音力強く爪弾かれるギター、
効果的に用いられたキーボード、ストリングスなど音数はぐっと少なくなったが音としての強度は前作以上。

ロウやトータスなど、アメリカの音響、スロウコアからの影響も随所にうかがわれる。

荒涼とした風景から祈りにも近い感情が浮かび上がるアルバム唯一の歌物Cody、フィードバックによるドローンが微細な音の粒のようになって重なり合い天高く上り詰めるEx-Cowboy、ヘヴィなリフの反復から突如としてレッドゾーンに振り切れていくまさに彼らならではの魅力に満ちたChristmas Stepsなど完成度の高い楽曲で構成されている。

このアルバムはほぼ全編インストなので聴く人によって印象は違うかもしれませんが、私が感じたのはかなり怖いというか、死後の世界に対する畏怖みたいな感覚でした。
不気味にすら思える静謐で美しいアルペジオやピアノの旋律が反復されながら、徐々に地の底から這い上がってくる地獄の業火のごとき轟音ノイズが吹き荒れてはひいていくそのコントラストに、ゾッとするような神秘的な恐怖を感じます。
特にアルバム後半の楽曲のテンションは狂気的とも思えるような凄まじさです。
多分想像力豊かな人が聴けば、月並みなホラー映画を観るより怖い感覚を喚起させられるのではないでしょうか。部屋を暗くして、ヘッドフォンで大音量で聴くことをおススメします。
