Reissue of the sole album by this punky power pop/ rock outfit featuring ex-Sex Pistols bassist Glen Matlock and pre-Ultravox vocalist Midge Ure. First released in 1978, it contains all 11 of the original cuts, including the standout title song, plus three unmarked bonus tracks, 'Empty Words', Only Arsenic' and a live cover of the Small Faces hit 'Here Comes The Nice'. 1999 release.

グレン・マトロックという人は、ロックンロールのメロを書くことにかけては天才ではないだろうか？公式にクレジットされている曲は、たぶんSex Pistolsの"NEVER MIND THE BOLLOCKS"とこのRich Kidsの"Ghost of Princes in Towers"の2枚の収録曲だけだと思うが、1曲として駄曲がない、というかすべてマスターピース級の名曲ばかりだ。私見だが、ポール・マッカートニー、ニック・ロウ、あるいはグレアム・グールドマンあたりと比べるべき才能ではないだろうか。（ちょとといいすぎか？）
Pistolsの曲を改めて聴いてみると、その過激でスキャンダラスなイメージとうらはらに、驚くほどメロがキャッチーである。（加えていうと演奏もうまい）あれだけの社会現象を巻き起こした背景には1回聴いただけですぐに覚えてしまう曲のよさも要因としてあったと思う。残念ながら、マトロックはメジャーデビュー前に首になり、このアルバムを製作していたというわけだ。
やはり、パフォーマーとしてキャラが地味だったのだろうか？Rich Kidsもミッジ・ユーロの加入でようやく形になったみたいだし、そのユーロに逃げられて、このアルバムが唯一の作品になってしまった。
しかし、今聴いても1枚で消えるには惜しいバンドだ。当時メディアにつけられた"Power Pop"という呼称が良くなかったのだろうか？最近のメロコアとか呼ばれる音楽を聴いたとき「これってパワー・ポップじゃん？」と思った人は結構いたはず。今聴いても全然古くない。輸入盤やさんで見つけたら即買いをおすすめします。

SEX PISTOLSの「陰の立役者」Glen MatlockとMidge Ureを中心に結成。
ジャケットにも表れているようにある意味お洒落というか、ＮＷっぽい部分も感じられ、ストレートなロックンロールだけでなく、アレンジに凝ったメロディアスな楽曲が混在しています。

PISTOLS的なモノを期待して聴くと肩透かしを喰うかも知れませんが、個人的にはこのキャッチーなロックも好きですね~！
「Strange One」「Bullet Proof Lover」「Rich Kids」といった佳曲が並びます。特に「Strange One」は、もう「ＮＷじゃん！」と言いたいです。不思議な浮遊感のあるサウンドにMidge Ureの妖しい歌声が絡みます。トップにこれを持って来るところがニクイですね。

中でもお気に入りは２，３，７，１０ですね。
２「Hung On You」は、まるで８０年代のアメリカンＨＲみたいな爽快な曲。思わずSAMMY HAGARやNIGHT RANGERを思い出してしまいました（何で？）。
３「Ghost Princes In Towers」は導入部がＮＷっぽいが、唸るBASSが非常に気持ちいいキャッチーなロックンロール。
７「Young Girl」は彼らの代表曲でしょう。タイトで軽快に飛ばすが、どこか甘酸っぱいサビメロがホント、いいですね。
１０「Lovers And Fools」は哀愁を帯びたメロディが美しく、もはやＮＷと言える曲です。ただ、こういう楽曲を作れるのもMidge Ureのキーの高いVOがあってこそなんでしょうね。

何となく掴み所が無く、全体像が不透明な作品です。だからこそ、何度も飽きずに聴いてしまうんです。

Sex Pistolsを脱退（事実上のクビ）したGlen Matlockが結成したバンドがThe Rich Kids。この時期のパンクバンドにはメロディが良いバンドが多いが、このThe Rich Kidsは特にメロディが良い。有名バンドに隠れてしまっているが、ロックが好きなら聞いて損はないと思う。音源が少ないことが非常に残念だ。初期パンク好きなら、このアルバムはマスト。
