一時期、考えすぎたのか分かりませんが「低迷期」に入ったと思われたジョー・サトリアーニが「完全復活」した記念すべきアルバムです。2002年発売。

鮮烈なデビューを飾って以来、快進撃を続けてきたジョー・サトリアーニですが、音作りに迷いがあるのか、奇を衒い過ぎたのかわかりませんが、最初に感じられた豪快さ、伸びやかさが薄れてしまい、次第に輝きを失っていく姿にヤキモキしていたファンも多かったのではないでしょう。

しかし、覚悟のスキンヘッドをバシッと決め、彼の原点に戻ったこの作品でやっと本来の輝きを取り戻してくれました。従来、歌心がありすぎるほどフレーズが豊かなギタリストですが、1曲、1曲を聴いているとそれぞれに強烈な個性が感じられ、また音の一つ一つに彼なりのこだわりが感じられるのです。加えて、彼の魅力である「疾走感」を取り戻しただけに、まさに「鬼に金棒」状態です。これからもこのままでいてほしいと切に望みます。

それにしてもアルバム中で唯一ライブ録音である、ラストの「Zz's song」で泣き叫ぶギターは感涙ものです。ふだんヴォーカル入りのロックを聴いている方にとって「オール・インストゥルメンタル」というのは冒険かもしれません。でも、彼のギターを聴けば「ヴォーカルなんて邪魔だな」と思うに違いません。それだけ、彼のギターは雄弁に我々の魂を揺り動かすのです。

何というか，１~３曲目で通常のアーティストの十曲分（何）です。（？）
ここまで『鮮明に情景が見えるインスト』は初めてです。感動。

インストゥルメンタルであるにも関わらず
全編にわたって（特に１，３，１０あたり）サビというものがしっかりとあります。
強烈な速弾きに連なるサビの泣きフレーズ！聴いたら世界変わります。

自分はこのアルバムでJOEに入ったのですが，
この一枚がきっかけになり今では完全なフリークです。

是非，一聴を勧めます。

このアルバムがリリースされる以前は、自分にとっては「上手だけどこれならSteve Vaiの方が良いなぁ。もっとルックスがカッコよければいいのにね」という感じだったのですが、このアルバムではギターが上手なだけではなく、とにかく全ての楽曲が非常に美しく、またそれを弾きこなすテクニックとフィーリングが見事にアルバムに収められていると感じました。この頃から見事なスキンヘッドになり、ルックス的にもＯＫになってます。初めて「love thing」を聞いたときはそのメロディの美しさに感動たものです。個人的にはこのアルバムが彼の現在までの最高傑作だと思います。
