Reissue of sole 1968 album by studio supergroup that pop/ rock producer Curt Boettcher (the Association) put together after being heavily influenced by psychedelia and California rock in order to further explore the progressive sounds going on at the time. Contains all 16 of the original tracks, plus six bonus tracks, siingle versions of 'It's You', 'To Claudia On Thursday', 'There Is No More To Say', '5 A.M.', 'I Just Want To Be Your Friend' and 'Prelude'. 22 tracks total. 1997 release.

こったアレンジ、マルチ・トラック・レコーディングなど、
いろいろトピックのあるアルバムですが、
何より聞いている人に幸せな気分を分けてくれる、そんな音楽。

このアルバムの画期的なのはポピュラー・ミュージック
史上初の１６チャンネル導入レコーディングの一つであ
る。是非２つのスピーカーの前で聴いていただきたい。
６６年から録音が始まり、６８年にリリースされるが同
時期のアルバムと聞き比べて欲しい。
例えばビートルズで云えば『ホワイト・アルバム』の時期にあたる。８トラック導入でそれまでに比べグッと音
の厚みが増したが、こちらのとでは音像のあまりの違い
に眼を見張ることだろう。
計算つくされたコーラス・ワーク、見事なコラージュ。
カートがそれまで裏方の仕事で培ってきた方法論がここ
きて一気に爆発！見事なまでに反映されている。
内容については今更いうまでもないがデビュー・シング
となった「イッツ・ユー」を始め「イット・ウォント・オールウェイズ・ビー・ザ・セイムー」など全編において美しいメロディー、細部にわたる編曲に絡み合う楽曲がトータル
性を醸しだしてる。またカートと共に共同プロデューサ
ーである、キース・オルセンの手腕も見逃せない。
オリジナル・アナログでは１~８がA面、９~１４がＢ面
、１５、１６がプロモ・シングルの未発表曲。

なお、『ミレニウム』の前身だった『ボール・ルーム』の
存在もファンなら見逃せない。

カート･ベッチャー／ゲイリー･アッシャーによる時代を超えたソフトロック名盤中の名盤(68年作)。

ソフトロックというジャンルをどのように見るかは結構難しい。カーペンターズやセルジオ･メンデスとブラジル66などが、ソフトロックとするなら、それはソフィティスケイトされたメロディの美しさや柔らかさが基準となっているように思うが、このミレニウムは、その要素も含みつつ、根っこにはビートルズの「サージェント・ペパーズ〜」から始まった実験音楽としての側面が強い。それは単に美しい音楽を目指したわけではなく、ちょっどブライアン･ウィルソンが「ペットサウンズ」でスタジオ録音での執拗なまでの緻密さを追求した行為とほぼ近い。そのためミレニウムは、正式バンドメンバーを決めずに、一流ミュージシャンを適材適所に配置するという、かなり特殊な形態を持っていた。つまりポップなオブラートに身を包みつつ、やっていることは、怖ろしいまでのプログレである。ソフトロックというより、ソフトプログレと呼びたいくらいにだ。

それでいて、いわゆるプログレから感じる難解さやとっつきにくさというのが、皆無であるのは、やはりそもそもがアソシエィションなどハーモーニーポップを手掛けてきた才人、カート･ベッチャーの恐るべき手腕にあるのだろう。これだけ実験的なことを試していても、人懐こさというのが、全く忘れらていない。むしろ奇抜なアレンジにより、その魅力を増しているくらいだ。
全く当時最先端だった16トラック録音で、いきなりこれを作ってしまったというのは、本当に驚愕すべきことだ。ジャンルという壁をあっさりと飛び越えられる本当の意味での名盤だと思う。
