Nasir Jones made this debut album at the age of 20, already armed with the calm perceptiveness and been-there-done-that attitude of a much older ghetto vet, though sometimes his inner callow youth shows itself. Illmatic is a look back at a life spent in the culture of the projects, acknowledging joy as much as pain and taking note of violence as a fact of his environment rather than a focus of his life. 90年代のヒップホップシーンを振り返るときに必ず出てくるであろう1枚。

この頃、西の勢いに圧されぎみだった東のヒップホップシーン。この状況を打開すべく、すべてを託されて投入された若干20歳の青年Nas（ナズ）。DJ Premier、Large Professor、Pete Rock、Q-tip、L.E.Sがそれぞれトラックを提供するという今では考えられない布陣で製作された本作。もはや東海岸（NY）の極みである。

特にプロデューサー陣の力の入れようは半端ではなく、制作中にお互いのトラックを聴いて一種の競争になったらしい。「PeteとTipのトラックを聴いた後、"ちくちょう！lab（実験室）に戻らなきゃ！"と思った」（by DJ Premier）。こいつは凄い。。。

言うまでもなくそれぞれのトラックは鮮やかで強烈なカラーを放っているわけだが、特にLarge Professor提供の"Halftime"は頭を振らずにはいられない。太いベースラインにNasが「Strike that！」とライムするところはくそかっこいい。

90年代のヒップホップに興味のある方は必須の1枚。

↓でＨＩＰ(かっこよく)　ＨＯＰ(ノリノリで踊る)こそがＨＩＰＨＯＰでＮＡＳをただのＲＡＰとコメントでいちいち言ってる人がいるがおれはこのアルバムでノリノリになれる。ＨＩＰＨＯＰは枠にとらわれない。だから聞く人間も枠にとらわれず聞けばＨＩＰＨＯＰの楽しさはもっと広がっていくだろう。

このアルバムは唯一無二の傑作だと思う、nasのスキルはmain sourceの
live at the BBQを聴いた人ならわかるだろう。
そして満を持してのソロデビューがこのillmaticだ、当時これだけのバックアップを受けて駄作を作った方が歴史に残る、それがnasなのだから最高の作品になる事はしごく当然の事だ。

ただこの傑作にもひとつ欠点がある、それは初心者にこの良さが伝わりにくいという事。
ましてや「B-BOY系」という言葉を恥ずかしげもなく使っている人間にはわかるはずがない。
初心者は聴かず嫌いをしないでこのアルバムの良さに気づいてもらいたい。
きっと少しづつでも気にいって最後は一生手放せなくなるはずだ。
