衝撃の名盤ピンクフロイドの”夜明けの口笛ふき”を発表後次第にドッラックの使用過多により精神が病んでしまったシドはもう1作目の作品でついにバンドを去らざる負えなくなった。その後彼のソロ作品の2作目では旧友ロジャーウォーターズでさえ匙を投げてしまうほどの錯乱振りだったらしい。そしてこのアルバムにはそのソロ2作にさえ入らなかった名曲が詰まっている。正式発表作品はギルモアやソフトマシーンが後からオーバーダブしていうるので比較的まとまった曲にプロデュースされているが、これらは発表されたのが、ブートレグ対策としかいえないほどの生のバレットの息使いが聞こえる。それはかつての美青年がジャケットの写真の様に精神の爆発を現しているのではなく優しい狂気です。フロイドを去ってからもよくスタジオに出かけ「俺に何か出来ることはないか？」と言ったエピソードもあるようにフロイドのメンバーが本当の彼を見たのかどうかは別としてかつて彼と過ごしてきた事が数々の超名盤を生み出すきっかけになった。その衝撃の1部がこのアルバムで聞こえるはずです。フランスの雑誌でこの何十年か後のバレットの写真を見た私は涙が出そうになりましたが、間違いなくこの時にはまだ狂ったダイアモンドです。そしてフロイドの最新ベストでの最後の曲がバレットのバイクなのは始まりも終わりもやはりフロイドのメンバーはバレットを超えられなかったという意味なのかも知れません。このアルバムと後のソロ2作は名曲と一緒にバレットの写真もみてください。きっと何か変化があると思います。

タイトル曲「OPEL」の素晴らしさもさることながら、他の収録曲にも何気に味わい深いものが多いです。Dolly Rockerのよくよく聴くとかなりとんでもないコード展開、Word Songの愛らしさ、Milky Wayの童謡味、それにLankyのサイケ鍋ぶりなんか。未発表曲はほとんどがシドのギターと声のみで、デモテイク曲もオーバーダブの少ない簡素な構成なだけに、かえってシドの情念が装飾抜きで剥き出しに迫ってくるような印象を受けます。いわゆる「狙ってる」感がゼロっていうか、やっぱり彼は天然、天才なんだと思う。

これを単なるコレクター向けのアルバムと思って聴いた私は涙が溢れてきました。ビートルズのサージェントペパーと並ぶ「夜明けの口笛ふき」を発表したころからドラッグのオーバードーピングの為にピンクフロイドで最も美貌の青年が次第に精神を病んでいきやがてかつて旧友ロジャーウォーターズからも匙を投げられたシドの孤独な終焉を描いたはずのアルバムだからです。ソロ2作がほとんど後からソフトマシーンやデビットギルモアの演奏をオーバダビングしかろうじて音楽を保っているものの。この作品はそれを排除している為、彼の聞こえる生の音をつたえてくれる。ジャケットもかつて面影もなく最近フランスで撮影された精神の爆発のような写真に近づいている。フロイドの現在のところの最新アルバムの最後にシドの作品を収録するほどやはり”狂ったダイアモンド”は今も彼は超えれない壁なのだと思います
