グレート・エスケイプって決して駄作じゃない。その当時のブラーが、こんなにぎゅっと詰まってるレコードがつまんないはずがない。ただ、その詰めこみ方があまりにも濃密すぎるから、たしかに時々苦しくなってしまう時もあるけど、でもそのくらいの方が正直だよね。

無敵だ。今のブラーに敵はない。前作『パーク・ライフ』が今もチャート・インするほど売れに売れ、ツアーにツアーを重ねてきた1年だったというのに、彼らはこんなに素晴らしい新作をひょいと完成させてしまった。たぶん、ビートルズが『フォー・セール』『ラバー・ソウル』『リボルバー』とたて続けに作品を発表していた頃も、リスナーはこんな気持ちにさせられていたのだろう。そう、ブラーは現代のビートルズ、である。
何しろ曲のポテンシャルがえらく高い。今回もボーナス・トラックを合わせて全17曲という量産ぶりで、例によって妙なコード進行のナンバーも多いというのに、1曲1曲がどれも恐ろしくポップ。まるで、ポップという言葉の範囲をどんどん広げているかのようだ。ブラーの手にかかればこれまで見過ごしてきた景色も一気に色づく、そんなマジックさえ感じる。ゆえに、ここ数年掲げてきた英国主義/モッズというキー・ワードももはや用なし、といった趣。前作のフィル・ダニエルズに続き、今回はイギリス労働党党首までをも引っ張りだしてきているが(11)、そんな政治色でさえ彼らの前ではポップなトーンに早変わりしてしまう。こんなことができるバンドが、今、他にどれだけいるというのだ。
タイトルの意味は映画のそれと同じ"大脱走"。だが、彼らはどこにも逃げもしないし隠れもしない。天下一のポップ・メイカーとして毅然と存在する。そしてその姿はとてつもなく美しい。ザ・フーもザ・ジャムもいらない。ビートルズも捨て去ってしまえ。このアルバムは私たちにそうサラリと告げているような気がするのである。

　ブラーの作品の中ではあまり評価の高くない作品だし、ブリットポップによる疲弊が感じられなくもないが、それでもさすがブラーというべき良作。私は何故かこの作品に非常に思い入れがあって「パークライフ」よりも全然好きだ。ともかくグレアムのギターが全てと言っても良いかもしれない。格好いいというのとも少し違う、ツボなリフオンパレードで、とても気持ちいい。
　やっぱり私は、オアシスよりもブラーなんだよな。
