テクニシャン揃いだった頃のマハビシュヌによるマイルストーン的作品。Fusion以前のジャズとロックの融合を試みた音作りだが、その独特なサウンドは現在聞いてもなお新鮮である。各メンバーのインプロヴィゼーションにおける名人芸は言うまでもなく、バンドユニットとしてのまとまりも前作より向上している。ただし、叙情的な音を期待する方には不向き。

ロックでも、ジャズでも、ジャズロックでも、インド音楽でも強烈な個性を醸し出すジョン･マクラフリンのジャズロックバンド、マハビシュヌオーケストラの代表作です。メンバーはヤン･ハマーやジャン･リュック･ポンティ等、これまた個性派ぞろいです。
ジョン･マクラフリンのギターが悲鳴を上げているような速弾きや呪文みたいなフレーズは最初は違和感があって、とっつきにくいのですが、一度ハマルと癖になります。端正な顔立ちからは想像できない音楽がきっと頭の中で鳴っているのですね。

これ初めて聞いたのは中学のときだったんだが、これは悪魔の音楽だ！と思ったね。
当時は勿論”パンク”という表現はなかったが、そのメロディー、バカテク、リズム、音のはずし方・・・・まさしくパンクだったね。
