７０年代フュージョン・シーンを象徴するプレイヤー達がマクラフリンの元に結集した７８年の名作。面子の豪華さが現在でも薄れていないところが素晴らしい。

前半３曲はマクラフリンともう一人のソロイストを中心としたセッション。後半４曲はクァルテット、トリオ、デュオと１曲ごとにメンバーが減っていき、最後にマクラフリンのソロで締めるという構成もにくい。

M-2はリハーサル不足だったのか、全員違う点で打っていたりするのだが、マクラフリンの怒涛のソロに合わせてバンドが物凄い高みにまで到達する様が聴くものを圧倒する。

何はともあれ、フュージョン入門としてもジョン・マクラフリン入門としてもお薦めの作品。

マハビシュヌ・オーケストラで一つの頂点をきわめてしまった
ジョン・マクラフリンが７０年代の総集編として
ソロ名義で発表した作品です。
ジャズ＋ロックとしての最終的な作品でもあります。
マハビシュヌよりは肩の力のぬけた印象です。
オールスターキャストで録音されていますが、
そこはソロ作品で、バンドのようなメンバー間の

強い緊張のようなものは排除された感じを受けます。
ジョンはこの後、より「ジャズ」的なアプローチを続けて現在に至ります。

肩の力が抜けた良いアルバム。
昔の仲間と久しぶりに会って、想い出を語らいながらセッションしました、
という雰囲気です。

レコードのときにはダブルジャケットになっていて、開くとセピア色の
記念写真のようにメンバーの写真が並んでいました。
表はジョン少年の写真、裏はパーソネルが書かれた紙にクリップで留められた
マクラフリンの写真です。

ノスタルジックな"My Foolish Heart"で終わるところもいいです。
少年の頃に好きだった曲なのかもしれません。
