大学生の時に買ったんだけど。なんじゃこりゃあ?と思って死蔵してたんですね。当然ですよね(笑)。しかし、それが今大好きなアルバムになって、今自室で鳴り響いてます。

たくさんの音楽を聞いて来て、ゲップが出て来たときに、オーネットの音楽は私を捕らえました。だいたいそんなもんじゃないでしょうか?

私がオーネットの音楽を聞いて感じる事は、その「軽やかさ」。チャーリー・パーカーはもちろん「バード」だが、オーネットだって「バード」なのである。

「チャパカ」は、その「羽ばたき」を思う存分に味わう事ができる。時に優雅に旋回し、時に鋭く滑空し、時にやさしくさえずる。2枚組だけど、聞き終わると、また始めから聞きたくなる。ただし、たいてい時間が許さない(笑)。

もしかしたら、空みたいなものではないか?空は見ていて飽きない。同じ表情は一つも無い。しかし、それを感じられない人もいる。そういう人もいて良いと、私は思う。

今また「チャパカ」は市場から消えているみたいですね。そういうCDもあって良いと、私は思う。

1965年6月ニューヨークで録音。パーソナルは、オーネット・コールマン(as)、ファラオ・サンダース(ts)、デヴィット・アイゼン(b)、チャールズ・モフェット(ds)。パート1-4、2枚組からなる大作だ。(21:13・18:44・17:37・21:46)。

この作品は当初オーネット・コールマン初の映画音楽となる予定だった作品である。アメリカの金満新人映画監督コンラッド・ルークスが自作『チャパクア(1966年)』のためにオーネット・コールマンに音楽を依頼したのだ。しかしながら最終的にこのアルバムの作品をルークスは使わず、ラヴィ・シャンカルの音楽を採用し、作曲された大作だけが残ってしまったのだ。面白いのはこの『チャパクア』とほぼ同じテーマを扱ったデヴィット・クローネンバーグ監督によるウイリアム・バロウズの小説の映画化作品『ネイキッド・ランチ』ではオーネット・コールマンの音楽が映画で採用されているのだ。不思議な因縁だ。

映画好きならおそらくデヴィット・クローネンバーグなら知っているが、コンラッド・ルークスって誰ってほとんどの人が言うだろう。ともかく肩すかしを最終的にはくらってしまったが、この作品を作ったときは初映画音楽ということでオーネット・コールマンも相当気合いが入っていたのを聴いていて感じる。おそらく彼の作品で最も大作だろう。大作ながらオーネット・コールマンらしさが満載の佳作だ。
