　「相撲グリップ」というタイトル通り、ジャケットは貴乃花と若乃花の兄弟が、がっぷり四つに組んだ写真である。日本人の感覚からすると変だが、欧米人には異文化的・神秘的に見えるらしい…。

　1981年の「Mean Machine」を最後に事実上活動を停止したドイツのLUCIFER'S FRIENDが、何と13年振りにLUCIFER'S FRIEND IIとして再結成された。シンガーはオリジナル・メンバーのJohn Lawton。URIAH HEEPの2代目シンガーとしても知られ、DEEP PURPLE、RAINBOWのリッチー・ブラックモアが起用を打電したこともある名シンガー。伸びのある美声で評価が高い人物だ。

　バンド名を --II としたのは、1981年までとは別の活動であることを示すため、との事。ところが、これが今までのどのアルバムよりも優れた作品になってしまうのだから不思議なものだ。「歌える」キャッチーなメロディーを軸に、悲壮感のある疾走曲から、明るいバラードまで、本当に様々なタイプの名曲がずらりと並ぶ。

　ジャケットにニッポンの「相撲」を使い、Get In（入場）、Banzai（万歳） などというインストが入る企画はこの際どうでもいい。とにかく、恐ろしいほど曲が揃っている。Track 5の別ヴァージョンのボーナス曲まで、全く捨て曲がないという信じられないアルバムで、美しいハードなロックが好きなら、迷わず聴いてみるといい。

　LUCIFER'S FRIEND自体が日本では無名だったため、日本盤は見送られたが、そのクオリティの高さから、輸入盤店への入荷が徐々に増え始め、最終的にはかなりの枚数が売れたようである。日本での配給も多いCastle Communications（現Castle Records）からのリリースだったにも関わらず、最後までどこの国内レコード会社も手を挙げなかったのは残念でならない。

Heartbreaker が流れだした瞬間、全身に鳥肌が立った。
この一曲は、john lawtonのVo.を堪能するための最高の一曲だろう。
解散済みのバンドを後追いで聴き、愛し、求めた者に対して、 これはなんという破格のご褒美だろう。

もちろん、このアルバムで彼らを初めて知る人たちにも安心して薦められる。
些か曲を詰め込みすぎな感はあるし、スタイルも多彩でアルバムとしての統一感は余りない。
しかし曲単位の質は平均して高く、名曲と呼んでしまっていいものもある。
ただの同窓会ではない、むしろ攻めているアルバムであり、若さすらある。


しっかしなぁ… これだけの作品を生んできた男たちがさぁ、過小評価も度が過ぎるよ。
ギランやオズボーンがなんぼのもんじゃいっつーのよ、マジで。
国内盤はおろか輸入盤すらろくに出てないとか、ありえないだろ。
まあそりゃ確かに一度もまともに売れなかった人たちだけどさぁ…
何が悪かったんだろ、運が悪かったんだとしか思えんよ。
