“palace music”“palace songs”“palace brothers”“bonny prince billy”
これらはすべて、Will Oldham（ウィル・オールダム）の別名義である。最近では、bonny~の名前で活動している彼は、アメリカ在住で、2004年現在30代半ばと思われる、カントリー・フォーク・ロック・シンガーである。

19歳でギターを弾きだしたのが、音楽活動の始まりらしい。俳優経験もあり、近年ではハーモニー・コリンと親交があり、映画「ジュリアン」にも友情出演している。ビョークをはじめ、多くのメジャーアーティストが彼にラブコールを送り、時には彼もそれに応えてオープニングアクトを務めたりする。インタビューなどでも多くを語らず、発言は常に哲学的で難解。作品数も多くライブ活動も精力的に行っているわりには、謎めいた人物だ。
しかし、こんなことはどうでもいい。
本作は、ウィル・オールダムの1997年までのシングルを集めた初期ベスト集なのだが、間違いなく、キャリア中の最高傑作と言って良いと思う。

1997年以降が良くないのかと言ったら、もちろんそんなことはない。彼は今も、素晴らしい作品をリリースし続けている。だが、すべてはこの初期の歌があってこそなのだ。
この作品を聴かずして、真にウィル・オールダムを理解することは出来ない。
そのくらい、重要な歌がいくつも収録されている。

特に、表題にもなっている最終曲。これこそが、ウィルなのだ。こんなロックで、ハードで、エモーショナルなナンバーは、彼はこれ以前にもこれ以後もほとんど書いていないが、ここにウィルのすべてがあると思う。
これを聴いて、心を動かされない人間はいないだろう。

2004年3月には、ついに不可能かと思われた初来日公演が実現した。素晴らしい、本当に素晴らしいライブだったが、ウィルはやはり、ミステリアスだった。彼は言う。「歌詞の意味なんて考えても仕方ないよ。君がそれを考えた瞬間、それは僕の曲じゃなくなるんだ。君の曲になるんだよ」ウィル本人を理解できなくても、彼の歌は多くの人の心を打つ。聴いたことのない人は、まずこのアルバムを！
