おそらく数あるフロイドの作品の中では
きわめて地味な存在であるはずだ。
フロイドの好きなアルバムでこれを挙げている人はあまり見ない。
しかしわたしはこれが大好きである。
特に二曲目の犬のSEはなかなか他には真似できないだろう。
これほどまでに自然に犬の鳴き声を曲の一部にしてしまうのは。
全体的に落ち着いた印象の曲が多い。
そして、ブルースチックなギターである。
しかし、フロイドというのはどちらかというと
ブルースから派生したような雰囲気もある音楽だと思うし、
これはそれが最も成功した例のようにすら思えるのだ。
何故世間では『狂気』ばかりでこちらがちっとも注目されないのか……
少し理解に苦しむところもある。

何でだろう？フロイドとすれば失敗作（売り上げ上）の部類に入るこのアルバムだが何故か良く聴いた。
今でもたまに無償に聴きたくなるのがこのアルバムである。特に一番のいお気に入りはドッグズで、１７分を超える大作。
イントロの不安を掻き立てられるようなギターからその世界に入ってしまう強烈な曲だ。この曲もギルモアの
ギターが素晴らしい。間奏の犬の叫びも哀れみを誘う。そしてヴォーカルがギルモアからウォーターズに替わり
怒涛のエンディング。ひと仕事終えた後のような満足感。これぞピンクフロイドサウンドの魔力である。

渋谷陽一がライナー・ノーツに書いているように、スターとしての地位を確立した後に、やるべきことをした作品。音楽的な意味よりも、政治的な意味の方が重要だろう。巨大な風船ブタを飛ばすなどということをしたらしいが、リアルに時間を共有しなかった私にも、興醒めすることなく意義が感じられる。大抵のバンドが政治的な姿勢を見せても馬鹿にしか見えないのとは違う。政治的なステイトメントなんてのは本当に大バンドでなきゃサマにならないということ。そうでなければ一部のファン以外にはまず届かないんだから。
