This debut revolutionised hip-hop (and launched half a dozen solo careers), as much for The RZA's raw barrage of off-kilter, off-key loops and sound effects as for its elliptically violent lyrics. Martial arts--at least as they appear in kung fu movies--are the Wu-Tang Clan's favourite metaphor, but they're also the organising principle of the group, a crowd of eight rappers, each with his own way-out-there "fighting style". They created their own little self-contained culture, with its own symbols and shifting identities and let listeners figure it out for themselves. 　西のSnoop Doggy Dogg、東のWu-Tangと、93年は二つの異質で、しかし良質なヒップホップが生まれた年だな、と思う。同時期にアルバムをリリースした東の雄としてNotorious B.I.Gが挙げられるが、こちらはPuff Daddyの作る、西に通ずるメロディアスなトラックであるのに対し、RZAの作るトラックは飽くまで硬派、ドライでノイジー。
　この硬派なトラックに対してライムをかますのがOl' Dirty Bastard、Method Manなどのクレイジーな連中を筆頭に、GhostfaceやRaekwonなどの技巧派、そしてクールで渋いGZAがまとめるといった感じ。この後のRZAの仕事の多さは見るに明らかだが、個人的には下手な鉄砲数撃ちゃ当たる方式に見える。それに対し、本作はグループデビュー作ということもあり、珠玉の名曲ぞろいと言ってよい。

HIPHOPが本当に異色を放っていた頃の最高傑作がこのアルバム。
UNDERGROUNDという言葉がピッタリなWU-TANG CLANの1stです。
現代人には少し聴きづらいかもしれないが、やはりHIPHOPはこのぐらいローファイなトラックの方が◎。

WU一般の棟梁RZAが作り出すオドロオドロしいトラック上で9人の悪党がラップ。これだけ人数が居るのにもかかわらず、キャラもかぶることなく一人一人の悪っぷりが思いっきり感じられる内容となってます。

初めて聴いた時、鳥肌立ちました…トラックは気持ち悪いし（壊れたのかと思った）ラップのテンションも尋常じゃない！いったい何なのコイツら！？って感じ。総帥RZAを筆頭に、去年急逝してしまったODB氏などトチ狂ってる奴ばっかし！！メンバー個々のソロ作品を聴いてからまたこっちを聴くとさらにヤバさが増しますよ。誰がラップしているのかが良く分かって、今では逆に楽しいくらいです。
まだソロを聴いてない方、まずはMethod Manの「Tical」からどうぞ！
