「この人誰？」って思う人はほとんどいないとは思いますが、一応説明しておきますと、バーナード･バトラーはブレッド･アンダーソンと共に90年代初頭のUKシーンを席巻したsuedeの元ギタリスト。個人的にはsuedeの独特の艶を持った毒のあるサウンドは、拒絶反応とまではいかないものの実はあんまり馴染めなかったりしたんですが、このバーナードバトラーのデビューソロアルバムは物凄いお気に入りで、今でも度々引っ張り出しては聴いている愛聴盤です。

自らのクラシックの素養によるところもあるのか、作品全体に渡って大きく導入されているバイオリン/チェロ/ビオラなどのストリングスが非常に印象的。雄大な景色を描くようにゆったりとたゆたう叙情的なメロディーは力強くも優しく、聴く者を癒してくれます。強引に前面には出てはこないけれど、要所要所で絶妙に自己主張しているギターワークはさすが天才ギタリストと言った感じ。

感傷的なメロディーとダイナミックなギターサウンド、そこに加わるストリングスと女性ボーカルのコーラスに、ＵＫギターロック好きなら間違いなく一発でＫＯされる"You Just Know"や"Not Alone"、ゆっくりと光に満ちた遥かなる高みへと昇りつめていく、Oasisの"Champagne Supernova"にも引けを取らないような名曲"Stay"など、ロッククラシックともいえる普遍的な輝きを放つ曲が詰まった名盤です。

官能なとてつもなくエロいギターを聴かせてくれるバトラー氏ですが、
ソロ一作目の今作はそんな官能ギターも見れません。
素顔のバトラー氏とでも言いましょうか。
本当はこうゆう音楽がやりたかったんでしょうね。

曲調的には全体的にミドルテンポのポップって感じです。
ギターも弾きまくってません。ほとんどがコードストロークです。
７曲目のNOT ALONEは豪華なホーンセクションで彼なりの
こだわったポップチューンといった感じです。

やはり彼は優れたシンガーと組んだ方が真価を発揮するんじゃないでしょうか。ブレッドしかり、マッカルモントしかり。
やっぱ、ギター弾いてる彼はカッコいいですね。
