ずばり、作曲家としてのBilly Joelの「完成品」でしょう。

どうしても「Good Night, SIGON」の重苦しさが目立ってしまい、ファンの間でもややもすれば敬遠されがちなアルバムですが、実際には、これまた重いテーマの「Alentown」でさえ、歌詞を無視してしまえば結構ポップな曲です。

いまだに人気の高い「Pressure」の方が、歌詞的には「病んでいる（救いがない）」ともいえます。それをむしろ「ポジティブ」に聴かせてしまうところこそが、彼の力量の「完成」の証ではないでしょうか。

タイトルの「ナイロンカーテン」を米ソ冷戦時代の象徴的な言葉である「鉄のカーテン」に対したものとみなし、政治的メッセージ色を論じられることが多いですよね。

しかし、ジャッケットの個性のない同じ家が立ち並ぶ風景が示す、「大量生産・大量消費」を善しとしてきた資本主義社会の象徴としての「ナイロン」、そしてそれが如何に薄っぺらなものでしかないか、だから「壁」ではなく「カーテン」としたのが本意だったのではないでしょうか。

ここに至るまでにBillyが築き上げてきた音楽的技量とセンスを最大限に奮って、ようやく彼自身（あるいは同世代のアメリカ人全て）が人生において背負ってきた未解決の問題・テーマを表現して見せることができたのだろうと思います。

一方で、そうやって「吐き出して」おいて、次作「イノセントマン」で思う存分50年代へと「現実逃避」をするあたりが、彼のユーモアなのかもしれません。

ビリージョエルが82年に放った傑作。ベトナム戦争や現代社会の諸問題を取り上げ、派手さはないもののどの楽曲も完成度が高く、引き締まったアルバムとなった。
切実な内容を軽やかに歌い上げる(正確には‘歌い上げているように見える’)1で幕を開け、へヴィーな2、キーボードとソリッドなドラムも効果的な名曲3、そしてある意味でビリーの最重要曲であり、サビの重厚なコーラスがまさに鎮魂歌といえる4、と続く流れは完璧であり、まさに圧巻。
他にも隠れた名曲8も収録されており、充実した１枚といえる。
初心者向けではないかもしれませんが、「ビリーザベスト」、「ストレンジャー」、「ニューヨーク５２番街」あたりを聞き込んでから挑戦すると良いと思う。
（ただしポップな内容を期待すると肩透かしを食うので注意。）

テーマはベトナム戦争、複雑な人間関係、現代社会におけるプレッシャーなど、多岐に渡っています。音もビートルズのホワイト・アルバムを彷彿とさせる、全体的に冷たく暗めな雰囲気。確かビリーは当時オートバイ事故に遭って大怪我をしたり、当時の妻と離婚したりと、色々な苦労を重ねている時期。それらの経験が音や歌詞に表れていると思います。確かに「ビリー・ジョエル」っぽくないかもしれないし、他のアルバムほど売れなかったかもしれませんが、これを聴いてしまうと、この後に続く「イノセント・マン」なんて聴けなくなってしまいます。個人的には「ストレンジャー」と並ぶ彼の最高傑作だと思います。
