スミスとは不思議なバンドだ。
伝統を重んじ未来に楽観的ではない、陰鬱に沈み良くも悪くも英国らしい、
そしてテクノロジーを用いない4ピースの普通のバンド。しかし非常に保守的になりうる要素を多く持っていながら
彼らに保守的という言葉は当てはまらない。

最も基本的な4ピースのスタイルで、世界中どこを探してもこのバンドにしか出せない強烈な個性かつ説得力を持った音を鳴らす。ジョニー・マーの澄明なギターリフとモリッシーのヨーデルみたいなヘンなボーカル、気持ちの悪いファルセット、そして弱虫のくせにやたら優しく強い歌。それは、永遠に色褪せない消えない光である。現代の若者へ・・・といえど、自分もスミスを知らない世代であるのだが、時を経て邂逅をはたし、本当に幸せだと思う。みなさんも是非！！

「The Headmaster Ritual」は1曲目。しょっぱなからマーの独特なコードスト
ロークに圧倒されます。こんな変な和音の曲は世の中にそうそう無いでしょう。
タイトなリズム隊に支えられて、エレキ／　アコースティックが複数鳴るギター
は、緻密に絡み合い、美しい「陰影」を施しています。

その上に、圧倒的な存在感で君臨するモリッシーの自虐ボイス。『学校キライ、
お家に帰りたい』てなことをヨーデルのようなフニャフニャ声で歌っています
が、そんな態度なのに英国の気品がギリギリ残存し、漂い、マーの緻密なギター
ワークとつかず離れずに交わりあい、この変態な曲の「陰影」を更に深めてい
ます。

前作同様、メロウなサウンドと美しい詩は健在。

更に前作に比べ、サウンドはエレキGの持つ可能性が上手く昇華され、詩は内行的なモノよりも外へ向けた力強いメッセージを持つ作品となっている。

当時、母国英国での人気と日本での認知不足に非常にギャップのあったバンドだが、蔭りのある美しい旋律は日本人の琴線に触れるサウンドだと思うし、２０年経った今でも私の愛聴盤である。
