1964年度作品。ケネディ大統領の暗殺、スーズ・ロトロとの決定的な破局、ロンドン公演などでの出来事がディラン自身に大きな影響を与え、ディランはプロテスト・ソングから遠ざかる。代わりに彼は内面的な事象を歌うようになり、自分の愛についての曲が増えた。今作はアルバム・タイトルにあるように、これまでのディランとは別の面を収めた4枚目の作品。こうした変身振りに、昔からのファン、特にプロテスト・シンガーとしてのディランを望んでいる人達は戸惑いを感じ様々な評価を下した。その多くは否定的なものだったが、表現の幅を貪欲に広げていく彼にはそれも必然であったのかも知れない。サウンド面においては後のフォーク・ロックを予感させる出来になっている。後に様々歌い継がれていく「マイ・バック・ペイジズ」「悲しきベイブ」など収録。

   前作『The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan』でプロテスト・シンガーとして頂点を極めたディランが、新たな方向を目指しはじめたことを示した4枚目。歌詞の内容は内省的になり、個人的な愛や感情を歌ったものが多くなった。また、音楽的にも、生ギターかピアノの弾き語りというスタイルながらも、ロック的なビート感覚をもった曲がかなり増えている。
   このアルバムに収録された8ビート感覚をもったフォーク・ソングが、その後登場するバーズなどのフォークロック勢に与えた影響はあまりにも大きい。（星野吉男）

フォークからロックへ移る過渡期の作品であることや、１日のセッションからレコーディングされていることから、やや奇異な印象を与えるこのアルバムですが、ボーカリスト・ボブディランの魅力を味わうには最高の一枚であると僕は思います。まず声の質からして魅力十分なのですが、「To Ramona」や「I Don't Believe You」で特に顕著に聞けるスィングするような独特の節回しがたまらなく好きです。
曲自体も初めは即興的な曲が多いと先入観がありましたが、聞き込むうちにそれぞれ個性をつよくもっているのが分かります。

エレクトリックに入る前の最後のアルバム。ただ演奏にギターとハーモニカしか使ってないだけである。そのリズムや内容はもう単なるフォークソングではない。詩の内容も一変し自分の感情を表現するものになった。そのためプロテストシンガーのイメージが付いていた当時は不評のアルバムだった。ふざけてるんじゃないかとさえ思われたらしい。しかし今聞けばいい曲の多いアルバムで、オールアイリアリーウォント、スパニッシュハーレムインシデント、自由の鐘、ラモーナに、マイバックぺイジズ、アイドントビリーヴユー、悲しきベイブとどれも落とせないような名曲ぞろいである。この後に発表するアルバムで問題が起きるわけだが、その前の前哨戦、前夜祭である。このアルバムで大きな合図を打ち上げたのである。このアルバムにもディランの歌とは別の詩が付いている。

いまさらこのアルバムに何かの評論を加えるのも邪魔臭い。まずは､フォーク時代最後にして彼の初のロック･アルバムと言ったら良いのでしょう｡
今回のSACDは結局殆んど買ったんだけど、この大好きなアルバムには一つの疑問がある｡

レコード時代からシンプルな録音でステレオ感なんか気にしなかった､殆んどモノに近い録音だった本盤を何故にサラウンド仕様にしたのか､勿論ないよりマシなのだけど､ならばもっと他のステレオ録音盤もそうして欲しかった｡

「ブロンド」なんて､普通のステレオ装置で初めて聞いた時プレイヤーが勝手にサラウンド設定を選択したのでディランのヴォーカルが聞こえてこなかったのにはびっくりした｡カラオケを買ってしまったのかと思ったね｡

それでこのアルバムも何が起こるかと思ってサラウンド仕様で聞いたけどあんまり変化はなかった｡この辺り何か意図があったのかちょっとした疑問に思っている｡でも､音楽はやっぱり満点！
