　商業的に成功したスラッシュ・メタルと言えば、METALLICA、MEGADETH が挙げられるだろうが、音楽的に最も優れていたのは、この METAL CHURCH だったろうと思う。半音階で上下する殺伐としたリフ、凄まじい金切り声を上げるヴォーカル…。Atlantic RecordsのA＆Rが「こんなヘヴィな音は、ウチでは扱えない」と言ったのは有名な話だ。しかし、知将カート・ヴァンダーフーフの優れた音楽センスは、耳の肥えたリスナーならば「別格」であることが分かるはずだ。

　激烈な音だが、決して滅茶苦茶に弾いているわけではない。音楽センスは抜群だ。冷静に旋律を追えば、「暗黒の使徒」を思わせる、秀逸なメロディーが配置されている事が分かる。絶叫ばかりに耳が行くが、デイヴィッド・ウェインの音程の正確さ、表現力は超一流である。この勢いで絶唱しながら、コンマ1音外さないシンガーはそう滅多に居るもんじゃない。

　楽曲の完成度では、次作「THE DARK」の方が一枚上を行くが、火花を散らすような激しさという意味では、断然本作が上だ。1. Beyond the Black 〜 2. Metal Church のメドレーは、メタル史上でも最高のオープニングの1つである。一転してバラード 4. Gods of Wrath では素晴らしい美声で聴衆を魅了するが、勿論コーラスは爆音と共にスクリームに突入する。

　毎作のようにメンバー・チェンジを繰り返し、活動が安定しなかったことから、ブレイクに至らなかった METAL CHURCH。しかし、その音楽の素晴らしさは、聴いてみれば必ず分かるはずだ。

記念すべき1stアルバム。
DeepPurpleのHighwayStarをカバーしている事が話題になったが
この空気を切り裂くような強烈なスクリームは
全盛期のイアン・ギランを軽く凌駕している。

１曲目Beyond The Black~２曲目Metal Churchへのダークな繋ぎ方、
3曲目の文字通りMerciless Onslaught（無慈悲な猛襲）。

このアルバムは最初から最後まで異常にテンションが高い。

しかも初期衝動をブチ撒けているようでその実、練りに練っている感じがする。
80年代のスラッシュ/パワーメタルが好きならば
初期2枚と「LIVE」は絶対に避けて通るべきではない。

尚、オフィシャルサイトでは"Battalions"や"Hitman"、
"God Of Wrath"のデモバージョンや
この1stの欧州盤LPにしか収録されていない"BigGuns",
METAL MASSACREに収録されていた名曲"The Brave"のライブバージョンなど
レアでアグレッシブなモノがダウンロードできるので要チェック。

ヘヴィーメタルファンであるなら、ぜひメタルチャーチを聴いてみて下さい。 彼等はオーソドックスなヘヴィーメタルをプレイしていますが、当時はスラッシュメタルと区別するためかパワーメタルと呼ばれていました。今の若いメタルファンの感覚だと、メロディックパワーメタルになるんでしょうか。私は当時メタルチャーチを聴き狂っていましたが、アメリカからこのようなスタイルのバンドが出てくるなんて驚き以外の何物でもなかったのです。まるでブリティッシュヘヴィーメタルみたいな腹にズシーンとくるヘヴィーネス、泣きのギター、どことなく陰のあるメロディー。このアルバムは捨て曲なんてありません!いつも私は、聴き始めると最後まで聴いてしまうのです。こんなにも素晴らしいアルバムは、もっともっと多くの人に聴いてもらいたいのです。メタルチャーチは最高のメタルバンドなのでメタルファンの方々、ぜひ一度だけでも聴いてみてください。

これはMETAL CHURCHの中で一番気に入ってるアルバムです。 かなりメタルしてます。メロディラインも良く、昔のアルバムですが現在でもすんなり聴けます。
