Reissue of Sabbath's 14th studio album from 1989, their first for the now-defunct I.R.S. label. The line-up on the record is Tony Iommi, Cozy Powell, Tony Martin and Geoff Nicholls and Laurence Cottle. All eight tracks have been digitally remastered & it also features new sleeve notes, plus the original cover art. 1999 release.

　トニー・マーティンがヴォーカルを務めた1989年作品。頭のない十字架の立つ、「神に見放された地」が歌われる。緩急の付いた正統派のサウンドを、緊迫感のあるキーボードが盛り上げる。タイトル曲「Headless Cross」、劇的な「Black Moon」など、いずれの曲も完成度が高い。中盤にはサバスらしいスロー・ナンバーも多く収録。イメージを裏切らない、ヘヴィなサウンドで本国でもある程度受け入れられた作品ではある。

　ブラック・サバス＝黒い安息日、という強烈なバンド名は、オジーが脱退した後も、バンドのイメージであり続けた。オリジナル編成でステータスを確立したバンドゆえ、違うメンバーによる別の作風にはなかなか光が当たらない。

　しかし、正統派メタル然としたマーティン時代の作品群も、完成度ではひけを取らない。特にドイツと此処日本では、マーティン時代の作品も同じように好評を得ており、ファンは多いのが嬉しい。

「BLACK SABBATHはオリジナル編成こそ最高である。」との意見には賛成だが、「それ以外の作品は聴く価値もない。」とする意見には断固として反対する。
HEAVEN＆HELLを素晴らしいと感じる人ならば、このアルバムがそれをも凌ぐ大傑作であることを認めざるを得ないと思う。何しろ捨て曲がない！！ロニーよりも耳に心地よいトニーのVOCALが最高に素晴らしい。

こんな凄い作品が未だに廃盤なんて…

自分は未だに昔購入したRVC時代のアルバムを持っているのだが。

ゲイリームーアのアフターザウォーに参加したコージーパウエルはツアーには同行せず、ブラックサバスへ電撃移籍。

作品自体は素晴らしく、ケチのつけようが無い。

ロニー時代のメロディとトミーアイオミのソリッドかつヘビィなギターは今聴いても鳥肌が立つ。

一刻も早い国内盤の再発(勿論リマスターで)が望まれる。
