ロックンロールの巡回公演はあまりヒットしたことがない。ジョー・コッカーのMad Dogs & Englishmen（マッド・ドッグス&イングリッシュメン）の公演がツアーに出る連中にどんなふうにしてそれを実現したかを教えてくれていることを思えば、それは驚くべきことである。1970年春にニューヨークのフィルモア・イーストでライヴ録音されたこのCDが（同名のフィルム同様）記録しているのは派手でずさんなショー（すべてが2か月あまりの間に着想され、組織され、放棄された）だが、大仰でずうずうしいロック魂にあふれていた。フロントマンでバンドの中心を務めるのがジョー・コッカー。体を震わせて熱唱するカリスマ的なブリティッシュソウル・シャウターだ。バンドリーダーのレオン・ラッセルは、これまでに録音された中では最高の部類に入るロック・ピアノを弾いている。そして、一流のゲスト（21人のシンガーとプレーヤーが売り物だ）に後のローリング・ストーンズのホーンセクションと後のデレク・アンド・ドミノスのリズムセクションをフィーチャー。コッカーは、「Cry Me a River」（邦題「クライ・ミー・ア・リヴァー」）、「Give Peace a Chance」（邦題「ギヴ・ピース・ア・チャンス」）、「The Letter」（邦題「あの娘のレター」）ほか多くのカバー曲でラッセルとクリス・ステイントンの急ごしらえの激しいアレンジの恩恵を大いに受けて輝いている。これはウッドストック時代にとってのレイ・チャールズのレビューと言えるかもしれない。しかし、愕然とするほど天才自身これをしのぐレコードはそう多くは残していない。（Steven Stolder, Amazon.com）

ツアーを追った映画のサントラ・ライブ盤です。
スワンプ色が強く演奏も荒いため自分は初めて聴いた時はとっつきにくかったのですが
何度か聴くうちにはまってきました。
個人的には、初めてジョー・コッカーを聴く人にはファースト（かセカンド）を薦めたいです。

出だしからいきなり2,4,5曲目と泥臭い演奏が続くあたりが良いです。
他にもいくつか聴き所がありますが
スタジオ作では味わえないゴスペルのような雑でパワフルな盛り上がりが魅力です。

確実に、この時代のJOE COCKERの代表作。あまりにも熱くエネルギッシュな歌いっぷりには、感動以外は無い。この1997年リマスター盤は、オリジナルのコモリが殆どなく、より鮮明に迫る。バンド陣も見事でLEONは勿論、２人の名手ドラマーが素晴らしい。PHIL COLLINS師も以前、絶賛のコメントをしていた。以降スランプと闘いながらも、数々の名唱を残していく、COCKER師も最高。同世代に生きられて、本当に幸せだ。しかし、もう日本盤は出ないのかな？去年の新作も出なかったけど。悲しいかな日本音楽市場。それと、同名映画もご機嫌。フィルモアでの"CRY ME A RIVER"のプロモも付けて、早いトコDVD化して欲しい。その筋の方、ヨロシク！

Leon Russell が'60年代を通じて培った人脈を最大限に生かし、絶頂期の Joe Cocker をサポートした、いわば２人の黄金時代を収録した金字塔的ライブアルバム。1970年の全米ツアーを映画化した同名のビデオもおすすめです。この人脈のうねりは Eric Clapton や George Harrison に代表される英国勢ミュージシャンをも巻き込み、あの名曲「Layla」や、史上初のロックチャリティーコンサートである「The Concert For Bangladesh」を生み出す母体となりました。
