幻想交響曲は怪演で知られるデッカ録音と同じ1968年のライヴ版。実はストコフスキーにとって、幻想交響曲は1914年に演奏したきり封印していたもので、1964年にも「モントゥーやパレーみたいに巧くやれないよ」とあっさり言っていた。その意味では御年８６歳にして開拓したレパートリーである。

BBCによる録音はシンプルな天吊りマイク（ブルムライン方式）で収録した原寸大のものだが、音の魔術師と言われた老師の面目躍如たる演奏である。ニュー・フィルハーモニア管の室内楽的な緊密なアンサンブルと明瞭なイントネーションは、大編成のオーケストラのような重量感はないが、ガラス細工の周りを四方から眺めるような透徹した感じに仕上がっている。良質な舞台劇にみる円熟したストーリー・テラーを満喫できる。

前座の法悦の詩は、印象派風に仕上げた色彩感豊かなもので、楽園をイメージさせるような健康美を演出している。老境に入って枯れるのではなく、むしろ肉体を離れた耽美の境地に達したことを伺わせ、これも法悦のひとつの解釈だと感じた。
