このゾルタン・コダーイの「ミサ・ブレヴィス」は、第2次世界大戦の当時、ハンガリーのブダペストがドイツ軍の包囲下にあった頃、書き始め、1944年に完成しました。終戦後ブダペストの教会の地下室で初演されたそうです。

もともと、オルガン伴奏によるミサでしたが、1950年に作曲者自身でオーケストラ版に改変されています。コダーイの合唱曲の中でも傑作だと思っています。民族的色彩の強いミサですが、それがかえって色彩感を強め、音楽のメリハリのついた印象深い合唱曲になっていると思います。
ミサ通常文の6つの部分のあと、「イテ・ミサ・エスト（ミサ、終わり）」が付け加えられています。グレゴリア聖歌の旋律がよく使用されています。また、バロックの教会音楽やルネサンス期のポリフォニーを取り入れた部分も散見します。

戦時中に書かれたミサですので、全般を通じてコダーイの「平和への祈り」が感じられる名曲だと思います。

アマチュア合唱団には馴染みのない曲ですが、とても深い精神性をたたえたミサですので、一度是非聞いて欲しいと思います。
