　ボウイの中で重要なアルバムと言えば、「ジギー・スター・ダスト」や「ロウ」などをあげますが、一番好きなアルバムと言うと、迷わずこのアルバム（のレコードではＢ面だった部分）をあげます。
　何よりも明るい。他のアルバムが暗いと言うわけではないが、アコースティックなサウンドに乗せ自分の好きなディランやアンディー・ウォーホールについて、さらには子供のことまで歌うボウイを聞いていると何かなごんでくるのです。ボウイに「なごみ」を求めると言うのも変ですが、実際にそうなのだから仕方がありません。
　ボウイ自身も子供が可愛いくて仕方がないという様子で、ジャケの裏にもそういった事が書かれています。こんなパーソナルなことを表に出すのは他のボウイのアルバムにはありません。アルバムのハイライトは、間違いなく「オー・ユー・プリティ・シングス」と「流砂」。（前者は題名だけでもひどくポジティブでびっくりします）。
　間違いなく、名盤。「ジギー・スター・ダスト」を買った人はこちらもお忘れなく。ジャケットも良い！

まだ高校生ですが、父が大ファンなので小さい頃から聞いていました。特にChanges、A life on Marsが好きです。声がすごくきれいだし、彼の音楽は今聞いても古く聞こえない。それってすごいと思います。
Changesは、いま放映しているEneloopという充電式電池のCMにも使用されていますよ。

一般的にボウイーにはミュージシャンとしてのピークが３度あったとされる。１度目は『ジギー・スターダスト』前後、２度目は『ロウ』のベルリン時代、３度目は世界と踊った『レッツ・ダンス』の時（『レッツ・ダンス』なんて入れるなと怒られるけど）。
このアルバムの曲は『ジギー・スターダスト』の楽曲群とほとんど同時期に平行して作られた。またアルバム自体も性格こそ異なるが『ジギー・スターダスト』と対になっている。『ジギー・スターダスト』がコンセプチャルで徹底した戦略で作りこまれたのに対し、このアルバムはコンセプト的要素はなく、より個人的で自由である。
自己の未来に自己暗示をかけるかのような意味合いを持つ「チェンジス」はボウイーの代表曲であるし、「火星の生活」は詩の内容はさておきメロディーの美しい秀作である。
しかし中でも出色なのがLP版ではＡ面のラストを飾った「流砂」である。隠語や比喩が多く使われた詩の内容は意味不明といってもいいぐらいだが、
Don't believe in yourself.
Don't decieve in belief.
Knowledge comes with death's release.
というサビの１節は、私が最も好きなボウイー曲の１節である。このサビの後に続くファルセットはボウイー史上最も美しいのはないか。ボウイーの誌的センスが凝集された１節でもある。
RYKO版が再発された1990年当時、ロッキンオンの編集者であった山崎洋一郎氏はこのサビの部分を、「人間の論理など信じるな、死ねば全てが分かるのだ」と訳してみせた。
アルバム自体の評価は☆☆☆☆☆だが、RYKO版では収録されていた「流砂」のデモ・バージョンも是非再収録して欲しかった。ストリングスを取り入れて壮大感のあるオリジナルと比べ、このデモ・バージョンはミック・ロンソンとのツインギター＆コーラスの引き語りで、異様な緊張感に包まれる。
