本アルバムはジギースターダストへと変貌を遂げるボウイの変身の初期段階を記録したものであるといえる。１曲目のようにミックロンソンのギターがほえる曲あり、３曲目のようにマークボランのものまね曲などおもちゃ箱のような仕上がりになっている。聴けば聴くほどに好きになっていくアルバムである。ニルバーナでおなじみのタイトルトラックは７０年代の曲と思えないほどに新しい。チャンスのある人はクラウスノミとのこの曲もぜひ聴いてみてほしい。

このアルバムはＬＰ発売当時にＵＫ、ＵＳＡ、ＪＰと異なった３種類ジャケットが存在しました。
カッコ良かったのは...日本盤（モノクロで足上げてる）
不思議なのは.........英国盤（本盤）
マヌケなのは.........米国盤（ボウイは存在せず漫画が書いてある）

そして、いつの間にかMarcus Keef(マーカス・キーフ）作のオリジナル英国盤になっていました。
マーカス・キーフの作るジャケットはどれも素晴らしい...その内の一つ

内容はジギー・スターダストよりもヘビーだと思う。

「Space Oddity」でのヒットを放って、その成功に少し戸惑い気味だったボウイが、次にリリースしたアルバム。アルバムのジャケットがまず話題になり(女装してソファに身を横たえた気だるげなボウイ)、内容については当時はそれほど突っ込んでは受け止められていなかったようだ。しかし、ここには精神病の兄が影を落とし、ボウイとしても狂気・超人といった哲学的問題を正面から突き詰めた初期ボウイを考察する上で、非常に重要なアルバムではないか。またそういったことを抜きにしてただ楽曲面だけを見ても優れている。８分を越す1は今のミュージックシーンで形骸化した楽曲よりはるかに説得力があり、またアルバムタイトル曲の7は故カート・コバーンが死の手前でMTVアンプラグドでカバーして再評価を受けた曲であるが、!あの時何故カートはこの曲をカバーすることにしたのかを考えるとき、背筋に寒気が走るのは私だけだろうか。
