変態ギタリストの雄、スティーヴ・ヴァイの1999年の作品です。1984年の衝撃的デビュー以来、一貫して変態ワールドを築いてきたヴァイにとって集大成的な作品だと個人的には思っています。デビュー作で感じられた異常な攻撃性こそ薄まりましたが、妙な中近東風の女性ボーカルが狂言回しの役割を務めながら展開されるヴァイ独自の世界観は、誰もが追随不可能な高みにまで達しています。これほど自由自在に自分の意思をギターに伝えることができるギタリストはほかにいないでしょう。

日本盤のみ14曲目がボーナストラックとして追加。また、13曲目の「Asian Sky」にはB'zが参加しています。私はB'zに対しては特別な思いはないので冷静に接することができますが、熱狂的B'zファンがこの作品を聴いてみてどんな感想をもったかを聞いてみたい気がします。松本氏のファンなら問題なしと思いますが、稲葉氏ファンにとっては水と油でしょうね。

Vaiのアルバムの中では比較的ハードロック色の押さえられたアルバム。この為ハードロックファンの中にはUltra Zoneを評価しない向きもある。しかし音楽的にはトータルバランスに優れた非常に完成度の高いアルバムであり、Vaiの音楽性の幅広さを物語る充実のアルバムといえる。
実際にトリプルネックで演奏レコーディングされたFever Dream、恒例の7th Song(Vaiは必ず7曲目にバラードを入れる)には非常にスムーズで聴き応えのある11拍子のWindows to the Soul、レイボーンのScuttle Buttin'にインスパイアされたというJibboom、B'zの二人をゲストに招いたAsian Sky、そして何と言っても圧巻はタイトルチューンのUltra Zone。エスニックな雰囲気を取り入れテクノの要素を融合しながらも陳腐に成らず、存分にVaiワールドを展開してくれる。

非常に充実した正に「音楽作品」であり、ハードロック系が苦手という人にもお勧めできるハイレベルのアルバムである。

１曲目，東南アジア系（？）のヴォーカルの入ったインスト…
これでもうヴァイの空間に引きずり込まれます。
その一曲目からタイトルチューンにいったときはもう…

個人的には非情に好きなアルバムです。
なんとなくジェフベック的かも知れません。

音楽を芸術として捉えてる方にはお勧めの一枚です。
逆に言うと，インストにスピードや疾走感を求める方には
少し取っつきづらいかも…？
