当時のブルーノートプロデューサーのアルフレッド・ライオンがどのような基準でこの録音のメンバーを決めたのか、いまとなってはその真意は知る由もないが、とにかく予想を超えた演奏となった事にライオンも大満足だったのではないだろうか。シカゴからでてきた小さな巨人であるグリフィンに、なんとコルトレーン、そして当時のブルーノートの看板テナーであったハンクモブレーを加えて、且つトランペットにリーモーガンである。リズム隊もウィントンケリー、ポールチェンバース、アートブレイキーとハードバップの代表者の強者揃い。ここはひとつ大音量で各奏者のプレイを聞き込みたいところ。

リトルジャイアンツの異名を持つジョニー･グリフィンがマイルスのテナーマンとして活躍したジョン･コルトレーンとハンク・モブレーという名手と競演した迫力盤。リズムセクションもウイントン・ケリー、ポール・チェンバースというこれまたマイルスバンドに欠かせない面々。さらにアート・ブレイキーがドラムスとくればこれはオールスターメンバーである。しかも新人として飛ぶ鳥を落とす勢いのリー・モーガンのトランペットが絡む。57年の演奏だが、この時期としてはコルトレーンが化けかかった頃で、同じくモンクとの共演によってコルトレーン同様進化を遂げたグリインが競り合っている。フィンガーワークと自在なアドリブに勝るグリフィンがやや優勢勝ちというところか。モブレーは中量級なので音量でやや劣る印象。いずれにしても異なったタイプのテナーを聴く事が出来る点で貴重なセッションである。今宵の君は、ボール・ベアリングと激しいブロー合戦が続くが、オール・ザ・シングス・ユー・アーではグリフィンの歌心が十分聞かれる。コルトレーンはシーツ･オブ･サウンズで応戦しているが、まだ完成途上で、カインド・オブ・ブルーやジャイアントステップスの演奏には及ばない。ベルベット・トーンのモブレーもかなり善戦している。

いわゆる名盤です。ジャズ評論家も高く評価します。でも、そんなことはどうでもいいのです。ジョニー・グリフィン、もちろん黒人です。そしてかなり、「濃い」プレイです。では、メンバーを見て見ましょう。リー・モーガン（トランペット）、ハンク・モブレー、ジョン・コルトレーン、そしてジョニー・グリフィン（テナー・サックス）、ウイントン・ケリー（ピアノ）、ポール・チェンバース（ベース）、アート・ブレイキー（ドラム）こんなメンバー、もう二度と集められないでしょう。３曲目の「オール・ザ・シングス・ユー・アー」聴いてください。生きていてよかった。ジャズを聴いてよかった。（松本敏之）
