   ハンク・モブレイは典型的なB級テナー奏者である。この場合のB級というのは誉め言葉なので、誤解しないように。つまりソニー・ロリンズやジョン・コルトレーンのようなA級テナー奏者ではないものの、ファンにこよなく愛されている好ましいミュージシャン、とでもいった意味合いなのだ。
   そしてモブレイといえば『ディッピン』、『ディッピン』といえば「リカード・ボサノヴァ」といわれるくらいで、65年に録音したこのアルバムは<2>によってジャズ喫茶の人気盤になった。ちなみにこの曲、イーディ・ゴーメのヒット曲「ザ・ギフト」と同一曲である。ビートルズ旋風が吹き荒れていた時代、日本のジャズ喫茶では毎日この曲が鳴っていた。モブレイのオリジナルであるオープニング曲はいわゆるジャズ・ロック調のノリの演奏だし、ビリー・ヒギンズとのフォー・バースがエキサイティングな<3>はハード・バップ調、最後はゆったりとしたバラードという具合に、さまざまな角度からモブレイのプレイを楽しめる代表作だ。リー・モーガンの参加も魅力。（市川正二）

ハンク・モブレーのジャズ・シーンにおける足跡はブルーノートをはじめとする数々のセッションに参加しイースト・コースト・ジャズの隆盛に一役買ったことである。また、サイドメンとしても、ジャズ・メッセンジャーズ、マイルス・デイビスのコンボに参加した事がその有能さと実力を物語っているといえよう。しかし、ベルベット・トーンと形容される音色は悪く言えば迫力がなく、アドリブのソロもモーダルな解釈がやや苦手で、あくまでもハード・バッパーの域を出ていない。しかし、このアルバムではジャズ・ロック調という時流に乗った部分もあるが、モブレーらしくリラックスしたのびのびとしたプレイを聞くことができる。特にイーディ・ゴーメによってヒットしたポップ・チューンを題材としたリカード・ボサノバの存在は、このアルバムの人気を決定的にし、全体を親しみやすいものにしたといえる。ここでのリー・モーガンのソロはややたどたどしさもあるが、スリリングで聞き所がいっぱいだ。60年代半ばのモブレーの代表作だといえよう。

「ボッサ」の付く曲に２曲名曲がある。「ブルー・ボッサ」と「リカード・ボッサノヴァ」。ブルー・・・はジョー・ヘンダーソンのブルーノートのアルバム「ページ・ワン」があるが、リカード・・・は、このアルバムで決まり。この一曲を聴くためだけに買ってもソンはない。古きよき時代のブルーノートの名作。（松本敏之）
