Janis Joplin made the blues her own. Though she didn't live to finish this album before her 1970 death from a heroin overdose, her intense passion and frantic cries of pain and ecstasy were enough to make Pearl one of the most memorable recordings of her era. Her band does fill up some vinyl with the instrumental "Buried Alive in the Blues," but it's the vocals that make this album worth hearing these many decades later. Listen to the tortured heartbreak of "Cry Baby" or the hopeful declarations of Kris Kristofferson's "Me & Bobby McGee" and understand why Joplin remains an essential, if tragic, figure in pop. その圧倒的でソウルフルな歌声で他を寄せ付けなかった
ジャニス・ジョプリンの最後の作品。彼女の歌い方は
飴と鞭みたいな歌い方だったと思う。ある時はゴンッと
頭を叩かれるような一瞬で爆発を起こすような歌い方
をしたと思うと、次にはオーディオにグングンと引き付け
られるように、伸び、粘着性、持久力のある歌い方を
するんだから聴いてて心揺さぶられるし、陶酔してしまう。

それにしてもカリスマってのは若死にしますよね。
ジム・モリソン, ジミ・ヘンドリックス, ジャニス・ジョプリン　と
皆27才で死んで、３Ｊなんて呼ばれてますが・・・

人が生まれながらに持ってるパワーや運が平等だとすると
カリスマは一瞬で爆発させてしまうのかな・・・。

ジャニスはこのアルバムを最後に、オーバードラッグでこの世を去った。２７歳だった。彼女の唸るような強烈なハスキーボイスに、バックバンドはいつも力負けする状態で、どうしても彼女のボーカルに較べると稚拙な演奏が目立っていたが、ようやく納得出来るバックバンドを手に入れ、録音した唯一のアルバム。ブルースの要素が強いが、一曲目の「ムーブ・オバー」などを聴くと、ロック・クイーンと呼ばれた理由が良く判る。聞き易いという音楽ではなく、実に個性的なボーカルなので、生理的に嫌という人もいるかも知れないが、聞き込むほどに味が出てくる。彼女の命をかけた歌唱は、理解出来れば感動は深いものがあると思います。

彼女の最後の作品であり、一番まとまりのあるアルバムである。意に反する売れ方、大変なコンサートツアー、メンバーとの不協和音、ドラッグなどで彼女は身も心も蝕まれていったのだろうと想像します。彼女の生き様を現すような「Buried Alive In The Blues」を聴くと、少々感傷的になってしまう。
この曲は後に歌詞をつけて生まれ変わっています。皆、Janisのことを頭に浮かべて歌っていることでしょう。
このアルバムには他にもスマッシュヒットが多く含まれており、やはりJanisの代表的なアルバムでしょう。Dan Penn作曲の名曲も含まれており、Rockが活き活きしていた頃の若者の悩みやパワーを体験下さい。
