それほどのまとまり、「バンドサウンド」。
アリスタレーベルを代表するジャズミュージシャンたちが一堂に集まって展開するいわゆるオールスターセッションだが、奇跡は起こった。
このメンバーでしかありえない新しいサウンド、これからのフュージョンの芽生えにして金字塔とも言える素晴らしい音楽になっている。

特にマイク・マイニエリ作曲のタイトル曲は永遠不滅の名曲名演！
適度な複雑さとポップなメロディの理想的な融合だ。
そしてハイスピードナンバー「ロックス」もランディ・ブレッカーの名曲（ラリー・コリエルが大暴れ！）。
抽象的イメージがまさにタイトルピッタリの「フローティング」。

特に後者２曲には一番キレてた頃のマイケル・ブレッカーの壮絶なソロがあることでも特筆すべき（特に「フローティング」は彼のベストソロの１つ！）。
そして何よりも素晴らしいのがトニー・レヴィン＆スティーヴ・ジョーダンの個性的なリズム。

レヴィンのこの時の音は、今でも僕の理想のベースサウンドだし、ジョーダンのタイトル曲でのドラミングはドラム史に残る名演。
どこをとっても素晴らしいこの名盤は、嬉しいことにさらに『２』に続くのだった。

「Jazzには、名曲はない。あるのは名演である」とある音楽家が言っていた。　それでも、名曲はあると思うが、それもこれもすべて演奏がすばらしくなければ、名曲も台無しになるであろう。

たしかに、このアルバムの中に入っている曲はそれぞれのアーチストの別のアルバムで聞くことは出来るが、ここにあるのはその演奏を遙かに越えた名演奏である。　単なるレコーディングセッションではなく、ライブコンサートという緊張感の中で繰り広げられる演奏は聴く者を熱く引きずり込む。時を感じさせないその新鮮さは、本物の証拠である。
