マイク・マイニエリのレーベルから発売のリマスター＆ボーナス・トラック収録の充実盤。寒かったPIT INNでのライヴのシーンが蘇ってきました。フュージョン・ブーム末期にこんなストレート・アヘッドな演奏をされて唖然、言葉を失いました。アナログ盤も聴きまくり、最近はあまり見かけなくなった厚手の2枚組プラケース仕様のCDも愛聴していましたが、こちらを入手してからは、すっかりトリコになりました。同じ『ノット・エチオピア』もガッドの集中力次第で正規テイクと別テイクではこんなにも違うのかと驚き。メジャー・レーベル盤ではないので、買えるうちにGETしておきましょう。当時、カセットのみに収録されていた曲が未収なのが残念。買い直しの方も未聴の方も急げ!!

5.0 out of 5 stars エポック・メイキングとしてのデビュー作, 2003/3/18
Fusionにカテゴライズされるスタジオ系ミュージションたちが、ユニットを組んでJazzに取り組んだ話題作。
発売当時、タモリの「汗を感じさせない4Beat」という表現が言い得て妙。まったく電気を使っていないにも関わらず、メインストリームを行く「いわゆるJazz」とは異なる肌触りが、多くのファンにとって少しだけ違和感を抱かせた。
その最大の要因はSteve Gadd。今や大御所となったMichael BreckerやビッグネームのEddie Gomezの参加も重要だが、この演奏のキーは何と言ってもGaddのドラミング。Jazzとはリズムの微妙なズレが推進力を得る音楽であるとも言えるが、彼のon timeなバッキングはまるで「北斗の拳」のように完璧にツボを押さえまくる。50年代にありがちなJazzの比喩、グルーヴとかジャジーとかの形容詞が当てはまらない、まったく新しい感覚だ。
これをどう評価するかだが、私は断固支持。特にTee Bag, Young and Fineなどアップテンポの演奏をウォークマンで大音響で聴いた時のカタルシスはたまらない快感。このデビュー作は六本木ピットインでのライブ録音で、日本のレーベルが出したはず。国内盤がないのはなぜ？

とにかく８０年代のジャズ・フュージョンのライブアルバムの中で完成度の高さは５本の指に入ると思います。

マイケルブレッカーの、お得意の“ハラヒレ”ブロウ（音もでっかくて若々しいぞー）、スティーブ・ガッドの超人的ドラムソロ、ドン・グロルニクのシャープかつインテリを感じさせるピアノ、そしてリーダーであるマイク・マイニエリのラテンノリのヴァイブ。
何だかやもするとミスマッチになりそうな組み合わせが、完璧なコラボレートを演出しています。

１曲渡辺香津美が参加してて、このギターがまたカッコイイーのだ。
