   速弾きギタリストの「教祖」、イングヴェイ・マルムスティーンのソロ3枚目となるアルバム。アルカトラス在籍時から並外れたギターテクで注目を集めていたイングヴェイ。彼を皮切りに、続々と超高速プレイを得意とするギタリストが登場した。しかし、いまだ彼を凌ぐギタリストがミュージックシーンに現れない。それは、彼の速弾きが単に技術的なものではなく、クラシカルかつ格調の高さをも醸し出しているからにほかならない。
   アルバムを出すごとに理想とするサウンドを実現していくイングヴェイ、3枚目の本作では北欧系独特のメランコリックなサウンドをさらにハード・ロック色の強いものに仕上げている。これには、以降のイングヴェイの作品でも何度か起用されている実力派ヴォーカリスト、マーク・ボールズに負うところが多いだろう。アルバムの流れもメリハリが利いている。たとえばアコースティックギターのインスト<4>から<5>のハードかつスピーディな曲へ、さらに明るめの<6>への移行など。イングヴェイは<9>のギターソロ1曲の中でも、静と動をきっちりと弾き分け、組曲に仕上げる優れたセンスを発揮している。彼の初期の代表作としてぜひ聴いてほしい。（富良仁 枝実）

voにマークヴォールズ、key、drにイエンス＆アンダースのヨハンソンブラーザーズという強力メンバーを従えた86年発表のイングヴェイ３枚目のソロアルバムです。イングヴェイ自身はgに加え、bも弾いています。

サウンドは曲調、プレーともに、ドラマティックという言葉がピッタリするサウンドになっています。北欧の音楽に多く聞かれる美しく哀愁あるメロディに載せて、イングヴェイのg、イエンスヨハンソンのkeyが印象的なソロプレーを聴かせてくれます。マークヴォールズのvo、アンダースヨハンソンのdrも力強く、聴き応えのあるアルバムになっています。イングヴェイファンはもちろんですが、様式美メタルが好きな方にもお奨めのアルバムです。

　HR/HM史に燦然と輝く名盤。

　VOにマーク・ボールズ、KEYとDSにはお馴染みイェンス＆アンダースのヨハンソン兄弟を据え、Bはイングヴェイがプレイ。

　彼の作品の中で一、二を争う楽曲の充実度もさることながら、やはり特筆すべきはそのギタープレイ。今も依然として優れたギタリストであることに違いはないが、このアルバムでは他を圧倒する本当に素晴らしいプレイをしている。ここ数作ではソロはおろか時にリズムさえもアバウトに弾いてしまう彼だが、この頃はまさに完璧。恐ろしく正確だ。しかもソロのフレーズは構築美に溢れている。ここまで歌心と超絶技巧が高水準で両立しているのは、彼の作品だとこれの他にはALCATRAZZの1STくらいのもの。

　本作は勿論のこと、ジョー・リン・ターナーと組んだ「ODYSSEY」や、DSにコージーを迎えた「FACING THE ANIMAL」を聴くとつくづく思うが、彼はソング・オリエンテッドな作品でこそ真の魅力を発揮する。
